[Opinions] Bruno? (and Adele)
With all the discussion regarding the upcoming SSA list I've just been thinking about pop culture references that may have an impact. That got me thinking about Adele and then, Bruno Mars. I think Adele already has a good chance of gaining popularity, since it seems to fit into more than one category of popular trends. But what to you think of Bruno? Any chance of it catching on? It always sort of struck me as a "dog name" but I already like Broen so I'm sort of liking it now. Names ending in "o" do seem to be hot right now.So what are your opinions on Bruno and Adele and do you think they're pop culture counterparts will have any affect on their standings? Any other similar pop reference names you can think of?

I recently realized that Bruno is one of my absolute favorite names, so I hope it doesn't become too popular! Bruno and Adele would make a smashing sibset.

BrunoI dont think Bruno will ever catch on with Americans, everytime I see it on boards people say it's a dogs name or relate it to the movie. Bruno Mars might make it usable to some people but right now its at 753, I cant see it ever crossing top 300 if that.

Adele will definitely see a rise in popularity. Even without the singer, it's part of the Maddie (Madeline, Madison) / Addie (Addison) pool of names. And I couldn't be happier to see Adele / Adela / Adelaide / Adeline / Adelina all get a boost in the rankings. But I wouldn't bet the house on Bruno going anywhere, or even being on the list at all. If anything that movie made me dislike the name. I didn't before because I know a man whose got a brother named Bruno. It was just a quirky, odd little name. But that movie did it a disservice. I've argued in the past for not letting cheesy pop culture references ruin names like Ursula, Imelda, Drusilla, Damien, and Malachi. So I'll try to follow my own advice and keep an open mind about Bruno. It just was never really a favorite to begin with so I don't have much energy for an inner struggle to keep it viable.

I'm curious about the negative reference for Imelda. Imelda May is the only person I've ever heard it one

First person I thought of was the actress Imelda Staunton.

ImeldaGood! If you're not put off by knowledge / memories / thoughts of Imelda Marcos then I won't tell you about her. It's good to know she isn't ruining the name for your generation, at least. What do you think of the name Imelda, as a name? Just curious.
