[Opinions] Jay
What do you think of Jay for a boy? Too simple? I really like it.

It's not my thing. I like names that have a little "more" to them. Jay is more nicknamey to me.
That being said it does have a pleasant, friendly sound to it. I like that it makes me think of the bird. :-D I could appreciate someone else using it.

It's OK, although a bit insubstantial. I think I'd prefer it as a nickname, for Jason or James perhaps?
If I was born a boy I would have been named James "Jay." But I really don't like it. I've known some sketchtastic Jays, so maybe that's why.
I like the simplicity.
I've known only one Jay. He was a child and his mother was a friend of mine. He was called Jay T., to distinguish him from his grandfather, who also was a Jay.
For years I didn't know this, and thought his mother was calling him by the initials J.T.

I actually really like it. Its masculine but at the same time its calm and kinda soothing. It reminds me of blue jays and birds are my favourite animals so that's a win.
It is quite simple though. But its also not that common (at least where I live) yet it fits in and isn't weird. Its like the cooler version of the all the James, Jadens and Jamies. I'd love to meet a boy called Jay. I do like it best in the middle name spot though cause it is simple and it flows well off a lot of first names

I like it. I won't be surprised if it starts rising in popularity after the new Great Gatsby movie comes out.
I think it's awesome. It has been on my list forever. I don't know if it seems too simple to me to actually use - my husband vetoed it on the first cut, along with most of the rest of my list, for our son. So I haven't really thought about it since then. But I like it.
Did you watch Modern Family last night?
Anyways I see it as a nickname, but I think it is too nicknamey for a legal name.

No, never watched that show.
I used to really like it when I was younger (8-12 years old, somewhere in there). It made me think of a blue jay. Nowadays, I feel like it is short and weak on it's own. I could see it being a middle name, akin to Lee. For a first name, I think I'd like to see it as a nickname. Jason, Jacob, James, Jadon.
Actually, the more I think of it in terms of the bird, the more fond I become of it again. A lot of the following middle names are names I liked around that time, as well.
Jay Nathaniel / Nathanael
Jay Hawthorne
Jay Hector
Jay Carter
Jay Carver
Jay Hugo

I don't know if "too simple" is the problem because I like quite a few simple names. I guess insubstantial is the word I would use. There's just something missing. And I don't like the look of it. Not that there is another way to spell it (that would make me like it) but the look bothers me a lot. It has a pretty nice sound though.
I like it. It has grown on me recently. It reminds me of blue jays. I would use it for a middle name only. I like names with more pizazz in the first name spot.
I kind of like it, but I think it's better as a nickname than on its own. It can be a nickname for any J name, so lots of options! I have an uncle James who goes by Jay and went to school with a Joseph who went by Jay.
I like it too. Especially as a nickname. But even as a full name it's nice. Not too simple at all. And because it's simple you could have a lot of fun with a middle name.

My grandfather's name
I see it as an older name, because my grandfather's name was Jay (he changed it from Jacob in his twenties). Recently, though, a good friend of mine by the name of Julian has started using Jay instead. Seems like everyone around him sees it as pretty dignified and retro-cool, and he loves it. I just see it as "grandpa." :P If Jane is great for a girl, Jay's not "too simple" for a boy! I like simple. Jay's nice in theory, but I probably wouldn't use it.

I like it. It always brings to mind a flashy, jet-setting kind of guy, but I like it. It can be used as a nickname for names starting with a J, also. My half-brother was named Joseph Anthony III, after my father, and called Jay.
