[Opinions] Re: Liz, as a nickname for Elizabeth and a survey
in reply to a message by Lily
My mom is an Elizabeth who uses Liz everywhere except on official documents. It's always been her favorite, and apart from a Polish nickname only used by her parents and a short period where the nuns at her school called her Betty against her will, she's never been called anything else.
Most of the adult Elizabeths I know or have known seem to go by a nickname most of the time; Liz and Beth are the most common, but I've known one Libby, one Tetty, and among the older Elizabeths, a couple Bettys, a Betsy, and a Bess. I can only think of two I know over age 25 who are always Elizabeth. The younger the Elizabeth, the more common it seems to be to use the name in full. The only Elizabeths I've met who have used Ellie & Lizzie have been young, too.
I've never met an Elizabeth who uses Lib, Bethy (well, maybe the Beths are this once in a while), Buffy, Effy, or Lizbeth. Any Eliza, Lisa, Liza, or Ella I've known was named Eliza, Lisa, Liza, or Ella, not Elizabeth. I've never met an Elizabeth who uses Lily, either; they're either Lilys or it's short for Lilian or Lilliana. My favorite nicknames are Liz, Lizzie, Liesl, Libby, Beth, Betsy, Elle, Elisa, Elise, and plenty of others. I love how there's a great nickname to suit any Elizabeth, no matter what she's like.
I've never met anyone who didn't spell it Elizabeth, but Elisabeth is another option, and I've seen Alyzabeth (yuck!) in local BAs.
