Hmm, you're right. Usually people aren't asking about baby names here, just our opinions on them, so I gave you my gut reaction. (NB: I did not ask for your opinion of my word choice...)
I should clarify that I actually like Basil a lot. It's made my far-hypothetical shortlist a few times. But it is kind of funny in a goofy, steampunky way. I think Bram, which I find ridiculous phonetically, would wear better in the real world, if you're talking about a hypothetical child and are on the fence. But I'd rather use Basil any day.
