It seems that Jules is feminine (which I can understand, it is a common nickname for Julie-names) and that Julius is old-man (again, understandable) I personally dislike Julian and like Julius, my husband is the opposite.

Jules is a girl's name to me. I love Julius and Julian, though.

Julian sounds more feminine than Julius, but Julian is more fashionable. I don't know which I'd choose. I don't particularly like either one, and I don't like Jules either.

I love Julius, and I think it's charming and loaded with character. I used to babysit a Julius when I was in high school, but he's the only one I've ever met. It really should be more popular, and I'm not sure why it isn't. Maybe it's just that -s ending names generally aren't as popular these days as those ending in -n.

Jules doesn't appeal to me, and it has been a frequent nickname for just about every Julie, Julia, and Juliana I've known. Maybe that holds it back, or maybe it makes people think of the "family jewels," and that holds it back. I don't know, but its lack of popularity doesn't surprise me the way Julius's does.

I love Julian, it's one of my favorite names. I would probably use Jules as a nickname. Julius is perfectly nice, just not my personal favorite.

I can't really explain it. But I like both Julius and Julian. I just prefer the sound of Julian for some reason.

I don't like Jules because it sounds slimey to me. It also seems girly and more like a girly nickname than a full first name to me.

Julius is a little Roman emperor-y. That's probably why. Names ending in "en" sound are a lot more trendy than the "us" sound in the U.S. Just take a look at the top 100.

I don't mind Julian...I think it is a bit weak sounding but it is fine on someone else's kid. I don't mind Jules as a nn for Julian but I dislike it as a full name. I also know way too many women named Julia, Julie and Juliana that go by Jules as a nickname, so maybe it is too feminine for the general public?

I'm fine with Jules too, but it sounds a bit too nicknamey for me to use. And Julius is an old mans name to me. I just can't picture a child named Julius. And then there's Julius Caesar...

Jules feels like a nn to me. (Juliet, Julie, Julian, etc.)
Julius feels too ancient, perhaps. (Julius Caesar)
Julian is more modern. I know a Hispanic teen named Julian, and that's the name of one of the John Lennon's sons.

Jules makes a fun nickname, but I suspect it isn't more popular because of that very funness, it's sort of comic-strip character.

I knew a Jules who was weak and wheezy so that contributed to my already "soft" impression of Jules. Plus, Jules as a nn for Julie/Julia of just on it's own is pretty popular on girls. Julius is bold and probably still very Roman sounding to a lot of people so I think it sort of scares people off. I quite like Julius but prefer it as a MN because Julian is loads more approachable

I love Julian with Jules as a NN, but I don't like Julius. Reminds me of Orange Julius.

I really like all three names but Julian is my least favorite. Jules is my favorite (it's on my PNL). I like the sound and look of it. I think of Jules as a rugged gentleman whereas Julius is a bit more sophisticated and smart. Julius nn Jules would be nice.

I used to work with a girl called Jules and I was pretty disappointed when I found out her name was Julia (Julia Frances). I don't really like Jules for a girl but it suited her really well.

Good question. I like (though don't love) Julian, but hate Jules and Julius. Now I'm trying to figure out why. I can't come up with anything other than image. Jules and Julius are old man names to me. They always make me think of Groucho Marx, I guess because Julius was his real name? I guess? But the two make me think of an old old (sic) man. Julian is a boy's name and a young man's name to me. And yes, any Julian will eventually grow old, unless he dies first, but I wouldn't want to start my son out in life with what I consider an old man name.

I know a Jules (thats his real name).
Other wise I know girls that are called Jules (as their names are Juliana or Julianne).
I much prefer Julian to Jules and Julius. I see Jules as a nickname more than a given name.
