[Opinions] Oisin
Since Ocean got a negative response from most people, wdyto Oisin? It is Irish, pronounced similar to Ocean. And what middle names would you pair it with?

I know a man named Oisin, now in his 40's, raised in Maine. He did have some problems with people who didn't know him and had only read the name tending to pronounce it O-sin, or Oy-sin. But really, anyone who knew him or his family quickly got the hang of it, and around here, he was the only one with the name. But even when people knew how to pronounce it, the spelling of it became another hurdle. He took to telling them it was spelled similarly to poison. These problems are shared by those bearing lots of other Welsh & Irish names, not to mention Asian or African ones, which we are seeming more of all the time. There is a sizable Somalian community in one of our cities, and Chinese students are being actively recruited by Maine high schools with dwindling local populations--ours had at least 20 this past year.Aside from all that, I really like the name Oisin, as well as its meaning.

I'm also not really a huge fan of Ocean, but mostly because living near the east coast USA it's just a word to me. I've never really thought of Oisin sounding similar to Ocean but it really does and in that way could be a great alternative.
I actually quite love Oisin because of it's interesting sound and it's amazing Irish heritage (I love Irish names!). The only reason I haven't seriously considered it myself is because of the slightly tricky spelling for those not familiar with Irish names, but it's such a great name that I'd love to see it get more use.Because Oisin is tied so closely to it's Irish Gaelic origin that it's easy to stick with Irish names but trying some more traditional classic names could balance the uniqueness of the name. I also love Oisin as a middle name as in Declan Oisin.Combos:
Oisin Declan
Oisin Patrick
Oisin Grady
Oisin Seamus
Oisin Dermot
Oisin Desmond
Oisin Brady
Oisin Brody
Oisin Shea
Oisin Shane
Oisin Donald
Oisin Luke
Oisin Garrett
Oisin Kyle
Oisin Bennett

Not really, it's OSH-een, but I guess they're a little close. I used to totally love Oisin, but got bored with it. I still think it's a handsome name, but it's not so exciting to me anymore.

I must be slightly deaf but I guess they are close enough to be use alternatively.

I don't see it working in the US, because it doesn't look anything like how it is supposed to be pronounced.

Really? In comparison to some of the other Irish names I've come across, this one comes off as one of the more usable ones (yes, I'm looking at you Eoghan, Siobhan, Niamh and Saoirse!)

yes...In the US, these names are not used much at all. Siobhan, spelled Shavonne or similarly, has been used occasionally. Ciara has also been used but has typically been pronounced like Sierra.
