Perhaps the surname Garboden is an alteration of the Armenian surname Garbedian, also spelt Garabedian, whose origin you'll find here -

Garabedian/Garbedian are very common here in the U.S, particularly California, where Oregon is a neighboring state. Oregon is where most of the Garbodens are found. I think the German origin is unlikely. One main reason is because the form Gerboden is not found. I haven't look much into the history of the Garboden surname. Maybe a German origin could be possible, but I think it is most likely of Armenian origin.
