I'm thinking Mary Diana Catherine Elizabeth for a girl. I thought maybe James for a boy but she has a brother named James, so maybe George William Charles Philip? I bet they have a lot of rules for the naming of a royal baby that will likely be a future monarch so I really have no idea. Maybe they give them a jar of names to pick out of.
I'm hoping they pick a royal name from farther back in the tree, like Matilda/Maud, Mary, Richard, George, John, or Eleanor. Or Harold! Edith! Oh man can you imagine. I hope they have twins named Harold and Edith. Best royal names ever.

What about Rosamund or Rosalind nn Rose/ Rosie? Those seem formal enough for a royal first name. I like Eleanor, Charlotte and Alice. Diana could be a mn, and Elizabeth could be there, since most of the females seem to have it as one of their mns (Anne, Beatrice, Zara, and Louise), but a Scottish form would be nice.
Boys- Arthur as a mn only, it's too corny/ too much to live up to as a fn. Personally, I'd stay away from the names of living relatives (Charles, Edward, James), but Phillip would be fine, since that's great-grandpa, and after this summer, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he died in his sleep.

I was definitely thinking Caroline since it would honor both Prince Charles and Carole Middleton. Alice is pretty and seems to be the favorite over on Nameberry. Others possibilities could be Eleanor, Charlotte, and Alexandra.

James would have controversy with Scotland, and it's the youngest QEII grandson's name as well. I'm guessing Henry will be in there as a middle, Prince William and Harry seem really close. I want to see a George or an Arthur. I love Philip as well, but I don't think that will happen. Something very classic.

I don't think Matilda or Arthur are particularly likely choices for a future monarch, though for subsequent children though they'd be right on the money. King Arthur would be too cartoonish, and Queen Maud is too remote a namesake. Also, Matilda is trendy in the UK so I don't think it'd have enough gravitas right now to be considered.
For a boy, I'd be astonished if it wasn't George or Albert.
For a girl, I'd look for Victoria, Alexandra, or even another little Elizabeth. I'd really love to see Eleanor, but I think it's probably also too remote.

I was talking with my mother about what Kate and Will would name their baby while we were out shopping. Though I have high hopes they'll actually call her Diana after Will's mother, my mom said that the Queen wouldn't allow it. She thinks they'll call the baby Margaret if it's a girl.

I think that if it is a boy, they will almost certainly go with George, Edward or Albert. I would bet a lot of my money on George though. It is a very prominent name of the Kings in their line of the family and it hasn't been used on anyone else in their immediate family in the past couple of generations.
As for a girl, I would bet on Victoria. Long shot names may be Mary, Margaret or Alice.
I expect Diana and Elizabeth to be middle names.
As this baby will be heir to the throne one day, I very much doubt they will stray too much further than the above names. For subsequent children, I think you will be more likely to see names like Arthur, Eleanor, Matilda, Caroline etc for subsequent children.

Or, the Prince of Wales was quoted as saying he'd have named a daughter Mary Rose after the battleship! Queen Mary was a ghastly old horror, but Princess Margaret Rose was ... pretty lively. I think Diana and Elizabeth stand a significant chance of being in the name. Matilda is also high on my list, as is Alice.
For a boy I don't think Charles will make an appearence, though maybe Philip might. I'm crossing for Albert also as I think this name needs a revival.

Man, am I the only one who isn't exited about the name? George, Charles, Philip, William, Diana, Elizabeth, Catherine, Margaret... It feels very predictable. But then again, I'm not interested in this couple at all. I'm already sick of this news.
But anyway. Diana will most likely be a middle name, as will Elizabeth. For a boy I bet on Charles, Philip, Edward and/or William.
I doubt they'll go with Victoria in the first name spot as there already is a future queen with that name (Crown princess Victoria of Sweden). They will probably not rule at the same time, but it would still be a bit confusing. I don't think they'll use any name that has been used by another European royalty already. Except Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth III?

There once was a Queen Emma(in the 11th century), so if I were in Kate's position I would want to pick something that people hadn't speculated about. I think Emma is pretty, modern (as in doesn't sound like a medieval name) and it is royal.

I don't think they'd name a first daughter Victoria, given that it's looking very likely their firstborn will be the future monarch (it's been agreed, but it's not yet law, so we can't say that for certain yet).
Queen Victoria defined a whole period of history - the Victorian era - a period where there was much change in British society.
I think that's an awful lot for another (potential) Queen Victoria to live up to.

Firstly, it's not a traditional royal name, and given that the Queen will have to give her stamp of approval, it won't pass that.
Secondly, and more importantly, I don't think William would want to name a daughter Princess Diana. I'm sure he realizes, that if he and Catherine named a daughter this, she would grow up in the shadow of his mother and forever be compared to her. Much better for their potential daughter to grow up away from that.
They'll use it as a middle name, of course they will, but I'd be shocked if they used it as a first name.

I think Charlotte is out, as William's uncle Earl Spencer (Diana's brother) became a father for the seventh time in July 2012, and his daughter was named Charlotte. Even though it's not the royal side of his family, I don't think they'll duplicate a name used by a family so recently, especially given the fact there'll only be about a year between them.
I don't think Caroline will feature either, I don't find it regal enough, Queen Caroline doesn't really evoke majesty to me. (Apologies to anyone called Caroline).

I would wish that, since they are a modern couple, that they would choose a decent traditional first name that hasn't been used in the royal family's history yet. You know, the family could use the fresh injection of a new name. They could reserve the child's middle names for honouring (i.e. still preserve family tradition in a way), so that way, they would have the freedom to choose a first name that they like without being completely limited to names that are in the family only.
I'm really hoping that they will go that route. And if they do, I would love it if they had a son and named him Rupert. A little prince Rupert would be so darling! Not to mention that King Rupert would sound very strong, too.

I just went to Wikipedia to look up the names of the Kings (and Queens) of England. Here are the names, and the list goes back to 927 A.D. The queens are in caps. only, and some disputed/ notable names in parenthesis with an explanation why it's there. Some of the names would really stand out.

I don't know, and I honestly could not give two hoots. I dislike them, actually, very much so, as well as the royal family and the whole press circus surrounding her pregnancy. One would think the silly, annoying, vapid woman was the first woman to be pregnant... ever. Ew, just...ew. More than that, people going on about her unborn child being the future monarch riles me as a staunch anti-monarchist. Hopefully the royals will be gently pushed out of our social/political system off to rot in the countryside somewhere before that happens. Just... argh.
With that off my chest, I hope the name at least isn't boring/stuffy... but I suspect it will be just that.

Real question is...
what will the queen approve of because they can say what they want to name the baby but the queen can shoot them down if she doesn't like it. And she has a history of being fairly picky. So which names are they most likely to try for and which of those will the queen actually approve of.
I personally doubt they will go for Victoria but maybe they will. Victoria just is a bit dated sounding. I think they will try to choose names that are a little more in at the moment like Elizabeth, Margaret, Eleanor, Alice, Caroline, Charlotte, etc...
Even if they tried for Matilda or Arthur the Queen probably wouldn't allow it. Charles, George, Albert, Edward, Andrew, Philip, etc... are more likely.
