[Opinions] Alma?
This is actually the name of a street near my house, but the first time I heard this name was on Michelle Williams' character, Alma Del Mar, in Brokeback Mountain. I fell in love with it instantly and like it with the middle name Peregrina, which I saw on one of the comments. Any possible middle names for Alma? How do you picture an Alma? Would love to hear from anyone.

It's my gran's name!My grandmother is Alma Joyce. I don't particularly like the name Alma, but it's alright. All I picture is my gran, who despite her age is very strong willed, intelligent, wise and quite feisty! hehe.

Alma is very southern to me - and it was looooong before Brokeback. My Gramma is part of a knitting circle and THREE of the ladies are named Alma. Personally, I'm not ready to see this name on children and, imo, it's not as pretty as other similar names like Emma, Ella, Ally, etc...nmsaa

I didn't care for it at all, but after "Brokeback Mountain" it's grown on me a tiny bit. :b~Heather~

Alma is beginning to grow on me. I used to think it was still hopelessly outdated, but I've recently stopped associating it to old ladies began to consider it more retro-chic and pretty in it's own, strangely appealing way. It makes me think of someone original and a little bit quirky. And I've always loved the meaning of the name. I think Alma Peregrine - yes, with an e in the end, because I'm not so fond of the repeation of the a sound - would make a stunning combo.

Alma is good. It is short, easy to write down and to pronounce, has a nice meaning and it is still interesting. I like it very much. Alma Peregrina might be too much - I'd use a more common mn with it. Chrisell may be right, there is a possibility of it becoming popular (my other secret guesses are Ruth and Ada).

Due for a comeback, I suspect . . .I think Alma could well tie in to the Emma / Ella / Allie / Amelia / Emily etc trend that's currently so dominant in girls' names.I find Alma a little plain, but it's also quite sweet. I think it needs a long, rich middle name:Alma Elizabeth
Alma Christine
Alma Vivienne
Alma Gwendolen
Alma Olivia
Alma Sylvie
Alma Evelyn
Alma Charlotte
Alma Caroline
Alma Cecily
Alma Dominique
Alma Catherine
Alma ThereseI believe the use of the name has historical significance in that it dates from the Battle of Alma during the Crimean War (1854).Answers.com on the Battle of Alma: http://snipurl.com/mjed
