Help[Opinions] Julian and Thomas
I have finally fully come around to Julian. It's been one of the names that I and my husband somewhat agreed on it. Now, though, I like it. I just finished a book that has a character named Julian, so I was able to see it in a non-hipster kid light. It's trendy, yes, and it will date, but it's got a history to it. Wdyt you think of it? And what do you think it of with Thomas, our first pick for a son? Our daughter will be Margaret, Miriam, Judith or Katarina (Margaret or Katarina if my husband gets his way, Miriam or Judith if I get my way)

I love Julian and Thomas. I like all the girls names too but especially Miriam and Katarina.
Judith and Julian are more similar than I would name siblings but they aren't really too similar I'm just picky, same thing with Miriam and Margaret they are too similar to have in a sibset because I don't want two children with first names that begin with the same letter except maybe if they were twins.
Thomas, Julian, and Miriam go nicely. So do Thomas, Julian, and Margaret. Katarina works but not as well. Thomas, Margaret, and Judith works well. So does Thomas, Miriam, and Judith. Julian and Thomas works. Julian and Margaret or Miriam also works really well. Thomas and Miriam or Margaret or Judith also works well. Katarina doesn't not work it just doesn't fit as well as the others. Julian is such an English classic name so of course it fits the most with other English classic names, same thing applies to Thomas, and all of these except Katarina.

I like Julian a lot. It works well with all the other names except Judith, since Julian and Judith are too similar for siblings.

Hm. I get two very different vibes from Julian and Thomas. Thomas is kind and caring to a fault. Down-to-earth and gentle, wouldn't hurt a fly. Julian as a bit of a bad-ass. Definitely has a few tattoos and rides a motorcycle.
Julian also doesn't "fit" with your girls selections - although Thomas does, very well. But I'm not a stickler for a perfect sibset, so I wouldn't let that stop you if you loved them both.

Thomas and Julian have both got a good Imperial Roman/early Christian vibe to them; I think it's a good match.
I know a Judith Margaretta, named after her grandmother. Might that be worth considering for a daughter, ensuring victory for both parents?

Julian is trendy and will be dated? I don't think so. I think it's been used enough over the years to hold up, even if it isn't technically a classic.
Anyway, I like both Julian and Thomas. I couldn't resist calling them Jules and Tommy, though.

So I used to read a lot of Danielle Steel novels as a teenager (or... I read ALL the Danielle Steel novels, more like it), and I see Julian as a total Danielle Steel name. I remember Julian most clearly as the son of some rich American named Sarah and her noble British husband, Richard. Julian had a sister named Isabelle, one named Elizabeth who died, and I think a brother named Xavier. And their last name was Whitfield. They lived in a french Chateau, were fabulously rich, had lots of faberge eggs (Danielle Steel is obsessed with faberge eggs) and Aubusson rugs (also obsessed). So my sixteen year old self decided that Julian and Isabelle Whitfield were the most perfect names in the entire world and that they would be my children. (I still like Isabelle.) But as I got older, I started to see Julian as kind of like Danielle Steel novels: pretentious, flimsy, insubstantial.
You didn't really need to hear all that, but I'm in a weird cabin fever mood.
But I like Julien better, and I really like Jules. As for Thomas, I've always been mad about it. I'm with Xander on girls names, though, Katarina and Margaret definitely mesh best with Thomas.

I don't get why people think Julian isn't butch? Julian goes with names like Albert, IMO - it's sort of heroic, radiates light, sounds ultra sane and reasonable, and certainly could suit a man who's dominant, tall, and sporty, just as well as it'd suit a boy who is introverted and sensitive and smart. Hipster, maybe, but ... not really, it's too generic and classic. Jules if you had to have a nick - it could be jockish or edgy, it has so little baggage! Miriam, Margaret, and Katarina sound much more hipster-kid to me than Julian. YMMV... The reason I didn't use Julian was mostly just because a relative had just used it, but also because it seemed a little safer than I wanted my son's name to be. Sort of like with Andrew or Nicholas ... I wanted to pick something just a shade less conservative-sounding.
Thomas is cool, but IMO only if he can be called Tom if he wants. I really like the name Tom for Thomas. It's got the same kind of balance as Julian... not overbearing (like Albert could be) but never wimpy either. So yeah, they go together, I think. About the same level of conservative, presently.

I dislike Julian...I think it sounds wimpy and creepy. There are far worse names out there though- at least Julian has history and it ages just fine. It is one of those names I personally don't like but I never think 'eww' when I meet one.
I adore Thomas. It is strong and handsome and Tom is such a 'nice guy' name (I put it in the same category as Joe and Sam...I can't imagine an awful Joe, Sam or Tom haha).
Julian fits with all the other names just fine. Miriam and Thomas would be a lovely brother and sister pair.

No, Alexander's family has a tradition of using full names, that's why I go for one or two syllable names. They will be Miriam and Thomas, although I find Thomas a bit too formal. Tom is adorable, I wonder if I could swing that with Alexander. (Mim is also a wee bit close to Mimi, which is what the grandkids call my mom)

That's fair enough. My family is a really big nickname family, no child of mine called Miriam or Thomas would ever stay that for long even if I insisted on it. That's why my mind always goes to potential nicknames whenever I'm looking at a new name :)

Mine is, too. It will be interesting to see how the two family dynamics work out - my pro-nickname family and his anti-nickname family. I'm 30 years old and my family still refers to me as Fave and Favey.

Thomas is nice, always been popular, more or less, and always will be. I'm not actually fond of Thomas as as the everyday-use name, I like Tom, but nobody seems to go by Tom till they're a teenager.
Julian I don't like at all. It gives off a wimpy, allergic-to-everything, ugly-glasses and not enough outdoors play kind of vibe. Tom would kick Julian's butt all over the playground every recess.

I don't see Julian as trendy at all. It's full of history. Julian is really nice. Thomas is a bit boring though, but they go together. Wouldn't do Julian and Judith though.
