Help[Opinions] How do you pronounce Johanna?
Do you pronounce it jo-ANN-a (like Joanna) or jo-HANN-a (like Jo+Hannah)?
I really like the second pronunciation (Jo+Hannah) but I'm worried people will always pronounce it like Joanna. I like Joanna but to me it's a different name with a different pronunciation. I just don't get why people don't pronounce the H in Johanna, I can't think of any other names that are pronounced with a silent H in English, unless it's at the end of the name.
If you pronounce it like jo-ANN-a, where are you from (just the country will do)?

Where I live, Johan = you(schwa)-HUN because long vowels tend to diphthongise with a neutral vowel. Which means that Johanna = you(schwa)-HUN-ah. Of course, Afrikaans speakers in the States are thin on the ground.
If you want the jo-HANN-a version, what about upper-casing the H - JoHannah? I think that should make your intentions clear!
Johanna is pretty old and tired; Johannah never happens; Joana would be Portuguese if anyone used it (in my experience they don't, not here anyway) and Joanna is very beautiful indeed and well worth using.

I pronounce Johanna like jo-HAH-nah (with -hanna rhyming with sauna, more or less) because that's the way the Johanna I work with pronounces it. Jo+Hannah would be my second guess. I wouldn't think to pronounce it like Joanna unless I was told to.
I like Joanna and Johanna. Johannah looks like it has too many letters, and Joana doesn't look like it has enough.

I say it like Joanna and I'm from the US. I definitely think more people would say "jo-HAN-ah" if it were spelled Johannah because it looks literally like a smush of Jo and Hannah.
I really like Johanna (pronounced like Joanna), but I don't like Johannah nearly as much. I just think it looks prettier without the H at the end. I like Joanna as well, but not Joana, which seems incomplete.

I pronounce it jo-HANN-a. While it's not as visually pleasing, I do think people would be more likely to pronounce the name correctly if it were spelled Johannah.
I'm not really a fan of any of those names but I like Johanna the best.

I pronounce it yo-HAH-nah actually, since that's the only way I've heard it pronounced by two German girls with this name. No idea what you'd get in America, but I assume people would tend to say it like Joanna, since they are probably more familiar with it.
I'm from Croatia and the name is not used here. I like Johanna with the German pronunciation, not a fan of any of them with the English one (I generally don't like Joe names).

yo-HAH-nah. I'm like Phoebe - it is more of a foreign name to me.
Would expect jo-HAH-nah if she were born to American parents.
I don't like the jo-Hannah pronunciation, and I can't say for sure I have ever heard of it.

I like Johanna. It feels timeless and feminine but not overly frilly.

The name Johanna (with Johannah being a variant) is somewhat popular in the conservative Christian homeschooling community, which is why the Duggars used it.

I quite like Joanna. Growing up I knew several and found it rather boring (was popular for girls my age along with Joanne which I dislike) but I can see the appeal in it now. Johanna and Johannah is too awkward for me. I don't like Joana.

This might have been my grandmother's name. (I've made mention of this before, so sorry to repeat myself!)
She was always called Hannah,but occasionally said she was quite sure she was really called Johanna.Not that she didn't know her own name,but she had been orphaned young, and I think papers had got lost.
Going by that, I'd guess she, and I would pronounce it Jo+Hannah.

yo-HAN-ah. When it has an "H" at the end, that's how I say it. Probably because the only woman I've met with the name pronounced it that way.

I've never heard it like Joanna. Jo Hanna or yo-HAH-na. My friend Johanna (Jo + Hanna) got called yo-HAH-na a lot, but not sure I ever heard Joanna. There are a lot of Dutch people here I guess.
I have a friend with a 2 year old Johanna and pretty sure she also pronounces it Jo + Hanna. I guess I've never heard her say it outloud though! Could be with a soft J I suppose.

I ususally say jo-HANN-a. I like that, cause it's closer to the proper European pronounciation. Pronouncing Johanna as jo-ANN-a sounds kind of Americanized. (Ironically, I am American.)

I pronounce it like Jo+Hannah. In fact, I prefer the spelling Johannah. I don't know that anyone (at least where I'm from- northeastern US) would pronounce it the same way as Joanna.

They both sound fresh to me, I just don't like Johanna being pronounced as Joanna, it doesn't make sense to me. I'm glad people pronounce it like Jo+Hannah where you live.

I pronounce it the german way yo-HANN-a. Of your pronounciations I like jo-HANN-a better, because then it's appreciably not the same as Joanna. I don't think that people pronounce it different if you write it Johannah.

I pronounce Johanna the same way as you pronounce Joanna: jo-ANN-a. I also pronounce Johannah as jo-ANN-a, though I'm not sure how correct that is. The only time I've heard the Jo-Hannah pronunciation is on the Duggars' show; it sounds comical at best, and hickish and ignorant at worse. My favorite spellings are Johanna and Joanna.

Maybe it's because I have a German parent and jo-HANN-a is closer to the German pronunciation which is yo-HAHN-a. It just seems odd to me not to pronounce the H. In New York I knew a Johanna who said it the way I like it. I've never met any other girls with the name or heard of any in the US so I don't know if there's a standard pronunciation of it in the US. There are many of them in Germany, though.

In the US, where I live, everyone would just pronounce it like Joanna. So, being realistic, that's how I would pronounce it/have to be okay with everyone else pronouncing it.

I guess not, because Crista lives in the US and pronounced it jo-HANN-a. The only American Johanna I knew also pronounced it like that. It probably depends on where you are from exactly. I've never met or heard of any others in the US, but read on this board a while back that some people would pronounce it like Joanna which really surprised me.
