Help[Opinions] Jill
is pretty neglected, but it is pretty. My best friend is actually named Jill, and I have grown fond of it. I think Jill and Lucy would be a CUTE sibset.

Welllll my sister is Jill and she has a dog named Lucy. Heh.
I love Jillian and it's not too common. I've met about three or four others not including my sister and it's weird because they're always perky, preppy cheerleader types while my sister is the complete opposite of that. Weird mental images.

I like Jill. I don't think it's pretty though. Well ... it's pretty like an oak tree is pretty. Of course it's 'pretty,' but loveliness is not the striking thing about it. Prettiness is not the thing that the name Jill invests in, and that is fine, it doesn't make it less feminine or less appealing. It's still a good name. It seems to me to be a name worn differently by grownups than by young girls, but it's good either way.
I guess Lucy goes with it alright in terms of style, but I don't like Lucy.

I like Jill a lot. I also like Jillian, but if I wanted to use Jill I'd just use it on its own.
I can't stand the name Lucy and it's got totally different vibes than Jill. As you said, Jill is neglected these days. Lucy is yuppie-trendy. The kind of parents who (stereotypically speaking) would use Lucy would not use Jill.

I like Jill, even though I can't stand Jillian. You're right, Jill is quite neglected. It seems that single-syllable girl names never are really popular, the way single-syllable boy names, especially nicknames, are. Just think of all the boys and men who are Bill, Bob, John, Jack, Ken, Chris, Tom, Matt, Jake, Mike, and on and on....

Were popular for girls once, but they died out. Lots of women now named Sue, Beth, Lynn, Anne, Jean, Jan, Dee, Jo, Liz, Pat and Pam. But now the only one-syllable name that's really popular for girls is Grace, (and that is very popular indeed.)
One-syllable nns for boys seem to be getting less use too. More young boys are just being called Michael, Daniel, Christopher, Samuel and Matthew. Jake, Nick, Ben, Sam and Chris are still popular but I'm noticing more and more parents preferring them to go by their full names.

I think you're right. In my generation you almost got sick of Sue, Beth, Jan and Pam, in particular. Yes, I have noticed that young boys more often go by a full name now. Still, you do hear Jake, Ben, etc.
My generation also was clogged with these: Patty, Debbie, Cindy, Sandy, Sherry, Kathy. OT, but I'm glad that trend died out too.
