My friend Jen and her partner welcomed a daughter Iona last week. Good times because she had a still born daughter Catriona last yearI'd have went Jura

Iona is nice.Question: Is the 'ona' sound of both names pronounced the same in Scotland? I ask because while I've only heard Iona pronounced i-OH-nuh, I've heard Catriona pronounced kah-TREE-nuh or even kah-TREE-oh-nuh where the o sound is barely pronounced. IOW, the OH-nuh of Iona isn't stressed in Catriona. And what about Fiona? I know in the US, we say fee-OH-nuh, but is it more like FEE-oh-nuh in Scotland?

Well I pronounce Catriona like Catrina! Fiona is fee-oh-nah to my ears anyway

I like both names and like that they have a connection to each other - CatrIONA. Lovely Scottish names.

Congratulations to them :)
Iona is fine, just nothing I would have chosen. Especially not with Catriona (same ending) but maybe they used it to honor her or something?
