If they sounded more like normal names for boys, it would be okay.
Meriadoc and Peregrin would just be eccentric, but they have a different appeal, don't they? Merry sounds silly and Pippin sounds insufferable in real life.
So I think in theory naming twins after LotR characters is not that bad, just flakey ... but these names would be groan-inducing.

As much as I like LotR, this just...no. They won't be taken seriously.

Stupid. Individually they're quite cute, but only as nicknames. Peregrine is a. guilty pleasure of mine.

Maybe for pets you could use both, we used to have Guinea pigs called Merry and Pippin.

I find them ridiculous and theme-ish. Too LotRish. You might as well lock them into the stereotype of being short and having large, hairy feet. Hopefully they'll become bffs with Gandalf and Aragorn.

As you are a writer, I am guessing you would consider these names for characters. And for that, it could work. As always, we have to think of the parents, who after all, are the ones who name the child/children.
The names are somewhat fanciful, but then, some parents are. I visualize young, dreamy, bookish parents.

I would definitely name two kittens Merry and Pippin though.

I quite like Merry. I've considered Merry myself. Knowing how confusing it would be to get people to spell, I'd never use it, though. I love the meaning. Pippin, otoh, is kind of silly, imo.

I choose stupid. Merry just looks like a cutesy spelling of Mary. Pippin just looks dumb, and sound like hiccups.
