I think it's sorta weird:) although, perhaps since he was named after someone from quite awhile ago, maybe his great grand was pronounced something like Lazarus? So maybe instead of Lay-zer like we say laser, mayhap they pronounce(d) it Laa-zer ( short a as in cash)...
Just a thought. What do you think?

It's an old Yiddish name, you're right, a variant of Lazarus (really Eliezer). I've heard it pronounced LAY-zer, LAH-zer, and LAZ-er, probably depends on the family.
