In the middle of the night, far to the north, the scouts became an army. More vampires had come over the mountains than had been scouting around Keenor and an attack was their plan all along.
The attack was quick and unexpected. The northerners barely had time to fight back. It was no surprise to either side when they lost, but a few soldiers managed to escape the battle fields undetected and ride south to warn the others.
Victory by victory the vampires worked their way down the Southlands. All the people of Odros, regardless of species, came together to fight the war. A few diplomatic water sprites were even convinced to drown any vampires who came near the rivers and lakes. Not everyone was well trained, most had had no warning until after the fightng started, but everyone at least tried.
And it could have been successful. The effort was there even if the skill was not and the vampires were outnumbered. But they had an advantage that went beyond numbers or training. Their dead weren't dead.
There are only a few ways to kill a vampire and the vast majority of vampires who "died" during the war were not killed in these ways. No matter how many vampires the others thought they killed there were always more. More than there should have been, more than they thought there would be. Or so it seemed. These supposedly extra and unaccounted for vampires were really the same ones who had been killed and had now come back to life.
It wasn’t entirely a secret that the vampires were lmost impossible to kill, but not many people knew and it was easily forgotten in battle when the only thing anyone had time to focus on was not dying. By the time it was remembered it was too late. Too many had died, too many cities had fallen, the vampires were too close to victory. Not even knowing the most important fact about their enemy could save them.
There was no official surrender, no crushing final defeat. The armies of the Southlands simply abandoned their camps on the battle fields one day while the vampire soldiers were sleeping. They went back to their cities and villages and territories and they let the vampires win rather than risk more lives to death or capture in an unwinnable fight.
Back in Tavaraen the people mourned the loss of Ayen's king. Airdan Blackfern had not directly ruled most of them, but they would all remember him.
As Soora was not actually of the Ayen line she could not inherit her husband's throne. In one somber coronation, taking place after the royal funeral and the funerals of the fallen soldiers, the title of queen was passed down to Enola, her brother Efren was declared her heir, and her mother was given minor ruling powers as a regent until Enola became an adult.
The vampires had accomplished their goal of claiming the Southlands and in the process made every survivor's life miserable. They controlled all the trade and taxed the Southlanders heavily, causing starvation in the less self-sufficient cities and poverty in the previously wealthier ones. Those who were taken prisoner during the war were enslaved. Even the fact that original governments were left mostly intact was a constant reminder of loss, emphasizing that they were so weakened that the vampires didn't need to worry about being overthrown because it wasn't possible.
