[Opinions] Need a name for the nickname
My husband and I are expecting a girl in December and need help with her name. We would like to call her Mattie after my great grandmother, but we'd like a more formal first name with Mattie being her nickname. So far the only names we can think of are Mathilde (which we don't particularly like) or Matalyn (which is too close to our other daughter's name, Adeline). Any ideas? We're thinking we'd like to use either Ellen or Rose as the middle name, if that helps. Thank you in advance!

You could use any of these names: http://www.behindthename.com/names/gender/feminine/pattern/*mad*,*mat*/
I'd consider Margaret.
I'd consider Margaret.
Thanks for the link!
Mattea / Mattia - or in any other spelling variation you prefer. I would think this to be a feminine form of Matthias - a name which I rather like. Mattie is a beautiful nick name, of which I first learned from Edith Wharton's story "Ethan Frome". It is difficult not to love this character.
Also, if you like, the name Mattie bears sufficient strength to stand as a real (legal) name, at least to me. I hope you let us know the name you choose.
Congratulations & Best of Luck!

We're considering just using Mattie, but my husband has a name that is typically used as a nickname and he wishes he had a formal name with a little more substance so he could use it in formal situations.
I can certainly understand this. Through certain informal introductions, I sometimes use my nick name when mentioning my last name - as the two roll together so easily, but I have not always done this in formal situations; however, the older I get, the more likely I am to "formally inform informally", or if you prefer, "formerly I was more formal" (smile).
I feel a unique & individual strength when I use my nick name together with my last name in formal situations. Although I've been called a fast talker anyway, I mention it quickly--and it rolls right off the tongue. Everything I've mentioned then of course defends your position to provide a formal name together with Mattie for your daughter to use at will. Best of Luck!

What about Matisse? Matisse Ellen could work.
Also, I don't like Matalyn either. My husband and I differ greatly in our name preferences. He says all my names are "grandma names" haha.
I like Mathilde too! My husband isn't a fan though.
I never considered Martha, but I actually kind of like it!
Mattea / Matea / Matthéa
Matrona
Matiah
Matilly (occasionally used in Australia, I thiiiiink)
Mataya (Hebrew origin, I think...don't quote me haha)
I'm supposing Matleena is too close to Adeline.
Amethyst, or maybe Amatista (amethyst in Spanish)
I personally think the nn Mattie would do well with Margot or Marta, possibly.
Can't think of too much else for now.

Matilda
Mattea/Matea (mah-TEH-ah or mah-TAY-ah)
Martha/Marta
Margaret? Kind of a stretch but I think it could work.
Montserrat, if you want to go all out
I know a Mattina "Mattie" but I can't say I much care for Mattina.

I agree on Mattina. I do like Martha/Marta and Mattea!
