It's unusable now. Mila could be a alternative though

Frankly, I think Mildred is usable because things like George and Henry and Charles are usable again. So go for it! Millie is at least, a very easy nickname if little Mildred is not fond of the reactions she gets - because I think people *would* comment often on how unusual it is.

Sure, it's usable. Millie is simpering and UGH, but maybe Mildy/Mildie sounds a little better? IDK, I can never think of a good NN for Mildred. :P

I do think it is usable; a surprisingly fresh revival.

How about Mildred Anaïs.

This is my sister-in-laws name and I think it usable. It's still a bit dusty and the middle 'd' does nothing to help it sound modern.

Our Mildred is called Mildz by many of us and Dred by her husband (eck!). I would be far more likely to go with Milly as a shortening.

As for combos, Mildred Holly, Mildred Vale, Mildred Selene or Mildred Caroline might work.

Personally I don't like it. All I see is mildew and dread.

Funny, I just passed a "Mildred Street" the other day and it got me thinking.

I had to think about it for a second though... my gut reaction was "ew mildew", but then I softened and though it sounded kind of sweet. "Mil" is a nice sound and I like the sharpness of "drid". It's spunky. I think the general public seems to settle on that initial "ew" reaction, though.

ETA: Wow, just looked up the meaning too and "gentle strength" is about as accurate as I can get with my feelings on Mildred.

Sure it is usable. It would be hipsterish because it's antiquated now and the sound is not fashionable. I would not mind being named Mildred though. It's no more frumpy than Matilda, and that seems to be getting used. Myrtle is uglier and fustier than Mildred, too, IMO.
When I say Mildred the word dread does not jump out. It's almost like Miltret - the D's are soft.

I don't care for it at all. It's got "dre[a]d" right there in the name. That combined with its proximity to "mildew" and the whole name is just one awful image and sound I can't get past. Fine as a MN, especially if honoring.

I like it. I think it's got a lot of character.

I'd also say it's not really usable anymore: it's dated and sounds like 'mildew'; I think it'd be the type of middle name that even your friends tease you for having when they find out about it...(and yet, I still get the feeling that the right person could totally rock this name)...

It's ok as a mn, but it's very ugly-sounding and dated.

Mildred is dead because it deserved to die. Mill Dread. I see nothing cool about it at all.

I adore Mildred! I think almost every name is usable.

I prefer Millie on its own, Mildred is still too old-lady-ish to me. Some more appealing "Mil-" names are:
