[Surname] Ganong
A friend of mine with German ancestry has this last name. I've been trying to uncover it's origin and meaning. I suspect German, dialectic, and wonder if there's some more familiar and recognizable name that I can derive a meaning from.
Btw ...just noted an American skier, Travis Ganong on the American ski team.
Thanks for any help!

I have a feeling that it is actually originates from French Canada and that Gagnon became Ganong overtime. Interesting note the alpine skier Ganong is going out with a French Canadian alpine skier called gagnon!
Ganong and Genung are alterations of the French name Guenon which is derived from the Germanic name Wano, from wan ‘hope’.
Jean Guenon from La Rochelle in Charente-Maritime m. Margreta Sneden in Brooklyn, NY in 1662. The surname was altered to Ganong and Genung in the next generation.

Lepic, do you think Guenon or Ganong could be related to Gagnon?
So cool ... thanks!!
