Help[Opinions] Mn help, honoring questions, is a nickname as a given name ok?
I'm not expecting but maybe in the near future, I'm not sure. But I would still love some advice on the boy name I like and girl combo I like.
Luke:
1. Is this popular right now? Someone on the board said it and related names are popular (I don't want to end up with the next Addison ).
2. I don't like Lucas, I like Luke. Can Luke stand on its own?
3. Middle name ideas?
4. Any bad associations?

A nn as a given name is ok. My grandpas band was John nn Jack and I have a cousin, Jack who was named after him.
I like Luke it's not too popular. I feel like Luca is more popular.

--Hit or miss depending on your area. Star Wars isn't helping much either.

--I think if paired with the right name to give a good flow.

--Actually, I think Luke makes a better middle name than first. But I keep going back to Jeremiah (Jeremiah Luke)

--Yes, my ex-fiance's middle name was Lucas and his dad was Luke. Also I don't like Star Wars.

Luke isn't a nickname for Lucas. Luke is the usual English form of the name.
Lucy's not a nickname either.
Kate's kind of a filler MN.
As for bad associations...for Luke, there's Luke Castellan from the Percy Jackson series. As for Lucy...there's Lucy from Peanuts and Lucy from Elfen Lied (though I don't think most people who aren't anime fans will recognize the latter).

I know Luke as a standalone better than I know it to associate with Lucas, probably due to a Christian background and growing up as a Star Wars fan.
I am not particular with specific versions or spellings for names of others, as variants, at least to me, are just personalized manifestations of the same essential root. So to me Katherine, Kathryn, Catherine, Katie, Katee, Kate, Kat, Cat or any of the various spellings or versions are essentially the same meaning - even among different pronunciations or formats.
My personal take on traditional names compared with nicknames is to legally assign the formalized lengthier version, so the child can more easily use as many shorter nicknames, pet-names, or other more distant versions upon circumstance at preference; however, before this, I would honor your thoughts - as you--as guiding parent / guardian would know the environments, circumstances, or conditions under the child grows best.

Luke can and very often does stand on its own. I don't especially like it but it's not bad. Luke Anderson seems better than Luke Addison; Addison is one of those colorless, androgynous surnamey names for girls that are very popular right now. Anderson has a bit more backbone and is more emphatically masculine than Addison.
I really do not like the name Lucy. It sounds goofy and cheap and wannabe-posh all at the same time, and Lucy Kate is so damn precious. Lucia I like, and Lucia Kate is okay. I pronounce Lucia like Loo-SEE-a; there's a couple different ways it's pronounced and that alone is a deal-breaker for me, though I do like the name.

1. I think it's moderately popular (As in it's not overused but it's also not rarely used_
2. I think Luke can stand on it's own just fine
3. Luke Jonathan, Luke Martin, Luke James, Luke Anthony, Luke Malcolm

2. Louisa is a completely different name, if you want a variant I#d choose Lucia but I prefer Lucy
3. Lucy Kate sounds nice together, not a fan of using a shorted version of a name as an actual name but it does sound nice and if you like it it's good!

2. I think Luke can stand on its own. It doesn't sound overly cutesy or anything. It works on a small child as well as an adult.

Luke is a short name and it just sort of cuts off with the hard sound of the K, making things sound a bit choppy or awkward that follow it. My cousin is Luke Ryan, but I just remember my dad joking and calling him "Lou cryin'" as an infant. Also, I thought of Luke Oliver, but that was immediately followed by "puke all over." :\

I personally think that using nicknames as names is alright. It's really just fun! I don't know why anyone would be upset.

3. I think I would use another simple, classic name as a middle name. Like Daniel, Philip, William and others like that. If you want something more fancy I would go with Axel, Atlas or Memphis. My final choice would probably be Atlas, but that's just my opinion.
4. I think Luke would be associated with Luke Skywalker from Star Wars a lot. It depends on you if you think that's bad or not. Other than that, I think it's a name that doesn't have any more associations. None on the top of my head, that is.

Other than that, it's a name that reminds a lot of us of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds by The Beatles. As a person named Jude, I don't find it that bad!

This doesn't mean they're common ... they make up just a little more than 1% of boys born, which is about as popular as Kyle when it was peaking (#18) in 1990. I think it will be somewhat common among his peers, at a level that will probably be pleasant and not annoying.
