What do you think of Tanya? Do you prefer it pronounced with the first syllable rhyming with "can" or with it rhyming with "John"? The only Tanya I've known pronounced it to rhyme with "can" and would correct you if you said it the other way.

I've only heard TAHN-ya (so rhyming with John). It's dated and sounds annoying. TAN-ya and TAWN-ya sound even more whiney and annoying, doubly awful.

ok, so THIS clears up the 'like John' pronunciation! Which struck me as very odd.
TAHN ya is how I've nearly always heard the name pronounced. But we pronounce John with a short 'o' here... and it doesn't sound anything like it. Makes sense now. Two countries divided by a common language as somebody once said :-)

Maybe it has to do with regional accents, but I've only ever heard Tania / Tanya / Tonya pronounced as TAHN-yuh (so, like "John"). It's nice, but also feels very 1970s.
Honestly, I don't think I like Tanya with a short-A. Sounds like she wants to tan someone's hide.

I have legit never heard the "can" pronunciation. Though, I imagine some of my family members would say it that way if they read it.
I prefer Tanya like Tawn-yah.
This name seems to have a stereotype to it, and not a good one.
To me it is simple and sweet. I do prefer the Tania spelling, but only because I like to be different that way.

No, I've never liked it. (I think I've almost always heard it to rhyme with John-ya. I've also very often seen it spelled Tonya.)

Yes - it is here in the UK too. Should have been clearer, I was talking about the origins of those names and why they were not essentially the same name

In a lot of the US they are pronounced identically and therefore used interchangeably.
I pronounce them differently because I'm Australian but I have a colleague named Tanja and one named Tonya and the Americans say them identically so we have nicknames for both to differentiate.

For me is TAH-nyah so the most similar is 'can' way but with British pron. Lol

As in "can", it's weird to me otherwise. It's not a name I find particularly attractive.
