What are the best nickname stories that you know? In my family nicknames are so common that my relatives are surprised to discover the REAL name of a family member.
For example:
Aunt Doris. Her real name is Helen. But since her mother was Helen, my aunt was called by her middle name, Doris, her whole life.

When I was little I nicknamed myself Fishsticks because I liked them so much as a kid!

I've got a few weird ones. My full name is MacKenna.
When I was little, my cheeks were so chubby that my family started calling me "Mackie Cheeks." They still call me Mackie, but the "cheeks" part kind of disappeared as I got older.
My friends call me Mac n Cheese, and because of that nickname, a few people call me Kraft (as in Kraft mac n cheese). When my friend can't get my attention, she calls me Macadamia Nutcase.
One guy I know calls me Jennifer Lawrence, because when I lost my voice, I sounded like her.
When my little sister was really young, she couldn't really pronounce MacKenna. She ended up calling me Tenna for a good three years.

My Grandma sent my Grandpa down to register the birth of my auntie and their second daughter... But he got her first and middle names the wrong way round! So officially she was Margery and has been her whole life, but this was my Grandma's name so she's always gone by Barbara (the name she was supposed to be!)

Growing up my cousin James was regularly called 'Jimmy James' within the family.
My Uncle Jim's name is actually Walter.

My son Garrett has the nickname Wally. When Garrett was about a year old, his big brother, Travis, was 4. Travis called Garrett by all kinds of crazy names and one of the more "normal" ones was Wally. It was the one that stuck.
My ex, father of Garrett and Travis, had a grandmother called Tissie within the family. When I knew her, Tissie was an elderly lady but still known by this childhood nickname. It was how her sister had said "Sister."
Tissie's sister, also an elderly lady when I knew her, was known in the family as Dauty. This was a childhood holdover of "Daughter."

I don't even know what my younger cousin's real name is but they call her Fee and they used to call her Fiona. Shrek was her favorite movie as a toddler and the nickname(s) stuck forever, lol.
My mom grew up with sisters who had the nicknames Peanut, Gwinkie and Burma. Yeah...yikes, right? Everyone knew them by those names. I do know Gwinkie's name is really Gwendolyn.

I work with so many people who go by names that are completely unrelated to their given names. Annoyingly, I can't think of one right now!

A family friend was going to name her child Zoe if it was a girl and Orion if it was a boy. Her mother liked the name Zoe so much that she asked, if the baby was a boy, if she could be called "Zoe" instead of "Grammy." And so, when Orion was born, she was Zoe to him and the rest of the family.

My husband's grandmother is called Sally, but her name is actually Rachel. All I know is that her husband called her Sally back in the day, I'd presume as a joke, but I don't think any of us know if there's a specific reason why.
My husband also has an aunt who is often called Dio. Apparently one of his cousins couldn't say her name, Janet, when she was little, and it sounded like Dio. So it stuck to differentiate her from another aunt by the same name.

I had an Aunt Susie. Her real name was Carol. Apparently, when she was a young child she decided she did not like Carol and that her new name was Susie. And everybody just started calling her Susie. She also named her daughter Susan.
When I was student teaching at my colleges daycare, there where two 4 yr olds who were neighbors. The girl, whose NN was Noodles was moving away. The little boy was heart broken. The little asked my if I would be his new Noodles. Well I told this sweet story to my Aunt who quickly decided that my new NN would be Noodles!

I am a male Barbra - and I am not the only one; and while this name is "Girlish", still I have read commentary on other name sites that Barbara (Barbra) is a patrician name. Yet for all this, my nickname preference is Barbie - perhaps the quintessential "girly-girl" form.
