I'm American and I've always seen it as mostly masculine. Robin Hood might be to blame for that, but yeah. Robin on a girl seems to have been a specific phase that makes it seem dated (with Robyn etc), but boy Robin seems more timeless.

I also just think of it as a word name rather than coming from Robert, but that might not reflect why it was popular.
