[Opinions] Bonnie
What do you think of the name Bonnie? My mother used to sing me the Scottish folk song the Skye Boat song which begins 'Speed, bonnie boat…' and listening to it again recently has got me interested in the name Bonnie.Do you think it is to cutesy or nicknamey to stand alone? What MNs would you pair it with?~~~

I think it is too cutesy. I don't like it and I would not be able to take a Bonnie seriously.

I used to think Bonnie was too cutesy to stand alone but several years ago I started watching a TV programme with a teenage Bonnie who did a lot positively for the name. I then met a real life Bonnie who was in her early 20's and, once again, she did the name a lot of favours. I don't think it will ever be a favourite of mine, nor will it make my long list, but I can say that I like it.I feel Bonnie might need a fuller, maybe edgier middle name.

Someone I know has a teenage daughter named Bonnie. It's fine as a stand-alone name, but not really my cup of tea - it's potentially a bit unfortunate if you're not very bonnie, and all middle names sound like the titles of Scottish poems with it - 'Bonnie Sarah', etc.

It worked well for a while on my Scottish terrier, who was certainly very beautiful. But as her personality developed, her name changed spontaneously to Bonzo, which one couldn't do with a human bearer. The only human called Bonnie that I know is a distant family connection whose actual name is Bronwen.

I don't really care for it. Too me it seems dated. The only two ladies I know with that name are in their 80s now.But I do think it's a stand alone name and not just a NNBonnie Abigail

I've never liked Bonnie all that much. It's not horrible, but it's way too cutesy for me. I can't think of anything I could stand as a full name for it. And I've always associated it with the word bonnet, which just drives home the super old fashioned feel I get from it.MNs:

Don't like it, never have.....(m)It's a little cutesy, but it's definitely not a nickname.

I like it and I prefer it on it's own, partially because of the fact hat I have no idea what Bonnie would even be a diminutive of.I think Bonnie has that dated quality to it yet is also so cute and endearing on a younger individual. In 2014 Bonnie made a comeback and landed a spot back on the charts. Possibly thanks to the third installment of the toy story franchise. There was a character named that, a little girl.Oddly enough, I can also picture a Bonnie to be a crazy and mentally unstable individual. I have only known 2 Bonnie's and both were really wacky. My sister's niece by marriage is Bonnie May. I think it's awful... Bland and cutesy. Pairing it with the anodyne filler May just says it all to me. Not my thing.

I just saw this name on a baking show! She was young, about 20.
I've come across a male Bonny too (not a nickname). He has a cidery not far from where I live. I'm not sure how old he is. 40 something?
Bonnie works on its own in my opinion.

I was legit thinking of this name this morning!I was specifically thinking of the actress Bonnie Hunt, because I think she may have voiced the mom-rabbit on Zootopia. In any case, it always reminds me of "My Bonnie lies over the ocean, My Bonnie lies over the sea..."Plus, my mother always thought Bonnie and Connie would make fantastic twin names (retch). As a singleton though, Bonnie is not bad. It does have that vintage kiddie vibe like Milly and Polly, but it's not as common. I would far prefer it as a nickname to something like Bonita though.
EDITED for middle names:
Bonnie Laurel
Bonnie Elise
Bonnie Pearl
Bonnie Kathleen
Bonnie Josette
Bonnie Nerissa

I wouldn't use it but it is cute. I've known several, including one who was about a year older than me. Plus, we once )very briefly) had a pet lamb named Bonnie about fifteen or so years back. So far as I know, none of the Bonnies I know use it as a nn. The only thing I can think of offhand for it to be a nn for is Bonita.Bonnie MichelleBonnie SueBonnie JoBonnie LynnBonnie Marie (those last few all have such a hot-pants and go-go boots vibe they ought to form a girl group)
