I'm starting to like the name Race. WDYT of it?

Nah. I dislike it. It falls in the category of those wannabe-masculine names Americans have started to use on boys now that all tradtional boys' names have been made "girls' names".

everybody, it's not *that* bad. I immediately thought of the Race Bannon/Jonny Quest connection too (Race was his nn, btw, his real name was Roger). I also know that NASCAR has more fans than any other sport, and that fan base is growing. I'm surprised there aren't more little Race's running around. This actually reminds me of two celebs and their kids: John Travolta's son Jett, which I think is cool because he's a pilot; and the director Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Sin City, Spy Kids; he owns Troublemaker Studios), who has five children - sons named Rocket, Racer, Rebel, and Rogue, and a newborn daughter named Rhiannon. I am a very *BIG* believer in being yourself and doing your own thing, so these are okay with me.
Race as in ethnicity was certainly not my first thought, and in today's world I really don't think it would be for most people (I'm not including nomophiles!).

I'm immediately reminded of the classic SNL word-association skit with Richard Pryor. He, as Mr. Wilson, is being interviewed for a job as a janitor, and the interviewer (Chevy Chase) does word association with him. It goes like this:
"Interviewer: [ casually ] "Negro".
Mr. Wilson: "Whitey".
Interviewer: "Tarbaby".
Mr. Wilson: [ silent, sure he didn't hear what he thinks he heard ] What'd you say?
Interviewer: [ repeating ] "Tarbaby".
Mr. Wilson: "Ofay".
Interviewer: "Colored".
Mr. Wilson: "Redneck".
Interviewer: "Junglebunny".
Mr. Wilson: [ starting to get angry ] "Peckerwood!"

With baggage like that, I wouldn't name a pet rock Race, let alone a kid who would eventually have to deal with all the issues that come along with the word.

Race is nms. It sounds too much like a t.v. character plus it's too much of a word name for me. Trace is better imo.

I don't really mind Race if spelled Rayce, it just looks more like a name that way. Race is too much a word to use (I'm a bit hypocritical in this because I do like names like River....)

There are too many ways this name can go. Besides the innocent but annoying race as in sporting, there is the politically and sometimes emotionally charged race as in ethnicity. It's not something to saddle a child with!
If anything, it could work as a NN if there were meaning behind it (like the kid loved to run around as a child, so you always asked whom he was racing. That's cute, but don't force it.) Or if it were short for something, but I can't think of anything right now that would work, so overall, I say no. Sorry!

I just think of the book "Race Matters." I would want to say that all the time to the kid.
Me, annoying poor young Race: How ya doin, Race? You know, Race Matters.
Beyond that, I think Race is too loaded a word without a strong history as a first name to be used.

I don't care for it. It's too much of a word, not enough of a name, if that makes sense. :b I know a little, now about 8 years old, named Race. His parents are a little quirky. The dad is about 20-25 years younger than the mother (she has 3 daughters from a previous marriage, the oldest of which is only a few years younger than her 'stepfather'). Also, the dad has jet black hair and a ton of piercings. I guess that's neither here nor there, but they are kind of "different" people I guess (and not overly friendly) so I wasn't overly surprised by the name when he was born. They claim it wasn't because they love racing or anything, but after the character Race Bannon from "Jonny Quest." Um, ok. :b

Hm. First thing I think of when I see it is: Which race does the name refer to - or is it the concept of race itself? And I'm wondering what race is the bearer.

Well, I can't stop you... I myself am STARTING to like Alexa. But, Race is definetly nmsaa. When I first saw this post I wondered if you were talking about names and what they had to do with races, or something. Not a very good association...
But then, I suppose it would be better than Maachkaeyluhh, Ahshleeighah, or N'tiskhflaksjeee. I think everyone could agree on that :)
