I like Sirius as a name and as a character. At the moment when a lot of people hear Sirius, they will probably think of the Harry Potter character possibly even before they think of the star in the Canis Major (Big Dog) constellation. For that reason, I would probably only use the name on a pet.

Sirius is one of those "that train done left the station" names; the Harry Potter series has pretty much tied the name into that one character, and anything else with a Sirius character is going to seem like a ripoff even if it isn't.

Also, as a name for a person in general, it's silly. "Are you Sirius?" "Yes, dead serious."

It's very very Harry Potter. All I can think of is Sirius Black. He was a cool character and I kind of like the sound of it but on the other hand it sounds like 'serious' and therefore just doesn't work beyond the wizarding world. It's fine for a character but not very imaginative as it was already used by Rowling. I mean if your story is as good or better than hers then it might work (as long as you are more creative with naming the other characters) but if it isn't great it will just seem kind of cheap, like bad fan fiction, to have a character named this. It is not exclusively her name or anything but it is very very tied to her character so as long as you can't create an equally interesting character it will just seem a bit strange. I would avoid it for a character.
