My mum has a girl in her class named Charline (and she has a fantastic alliterative French surname to go with it). I prefer that spelling over Charlene, not sure why. I guess -line just looks smoother than -lene fore some reason.
I like both nicknames Charlie and Lottie. And I think Lottie is nice on it's own too.
And ranking those four from best to "worst" (though I don't particularly dislike any of them)... Charlotte, Carlotta, Charlene, Charlotta
