I love the name Joshua as well, but I also love Josh! I don't know if it's avoidable. I have a cousin named Gabrielle and my aunt doesn't allow people to call her Gabby or anything other than her name. So far, that has worked out and people do call her Gabrielle. I think if you refer to him as only Joshua and tell family members and friends not to call him Josh then he will in turn introduce himself as Joshua and it would stick? I don't know, it's one of those things that just depends I guess.
