Do you like the name Virginia? What about Virginia Rose? Normally I find Rose too hackneyed, but Virginia balances it out.

I used to love Virginia as a kid, but now it just sounds too clunky.

I like Virginia; it's quite uncommon at this point, and has a lovely sound. A lot of weight in that name, though.
The only Virginia I know is a young doctor. She is a natural, easy kind of beautiful -- and brilliant. So I have good associations.
And Virginia Woolf!
Virginia Rose is pleasant Americana for me.

Virginia is my sister's name. She hates it (because it means "virgin" plus some people make state jokes), and I've always thought it sounded heavy.
I can see the appeal of it, though. It makes me think of hedgerows and lace curtains...or of ivy on brick walls...and my mom used to call my sister Virginia Dare when we were younger, which is a fun association.
About Virginia Rose:
I don't think Virginia balances out Rose well, or if it does, the result is just nms. I get a very strong impression of Typical Southern Belle from it...

All I can think of is 'that's a state.'
If I try to push away that association, it still isn't particularly aesthetically pleasing to me, but I can't tell how much of that is holdover from the state thing.

I used to really like it. It was one of my favorite names many years ago. Now I find the 'virgin' association slightly problematic. I don't know if I would like to have a name like this. On the other hand it is a beautiful classic with a lot of history. I always think of the color white when I hear it. Of white flowers, white porcelain and white porcelain dolls. It feels like a very delicate name that has some class and strength at the same time.
I would love to see this name used more often. But I am not sure if it will ever make a comeback. I think it might not be able to come back. My guess is that the virgin association was seen as something good back in the day when it was popular as you were supposed to remain a virgin until marriage etc. Nowadays it seems restrictive, old fashioned and slightly embarrassing. The youngest Virginia I know is in her early 30s now. I know a Virginya who is in her mid 30s as well but all the others I know are way over 60 years old. And I don't know too many either, I guess it was last really common so long ago that many of the women who received this name have already died. I think it's a name that might die out pretty much in the English speaking world, but I hope it doesn't! I know a handful of younger Virginias from Italy who are in their 20s. Virginie used to be quite common in France not too long ago.
I also don't think that it has any nice nicknames. Ginny is the best by far and kind of cute, I guess I could live with that. But I much prefer the full name. I can't stand any other nicknames for it Virgie, Gin, Ginna, Ginger, Virge, Ginia - they all sound horrible to me.

It has all the elements that should cause me to like it, but I don't. It has a clunky, horsey image for me.
