I get the aversion to "vain" I just don't see how it's much different than names like
Sylvain

Madeline
(mad),
Mallory
(mal),
Neville
(evil),
Obadiah
(bad),
Sadie
(sad) or even
Cassius
(which means vain).
Would it look better as Vervaine?

It looks better to me as Vervaine. That softens the whole feel of it. :)
