Well, I'd rather be an Esther than a Tess, but if I had to use a nn for Esther, I'd pick Tess over Essie or Estie or Ettie without a second thought.
Both names, Esther and Rachel, are nice on their own, but together they give a very strong impression of a Jewish family, which is fine, but since I don't know if your Tess's family is Jewish, I can't say whether that was done on purpose. It's something to be aware of.
