I like the name, but I get a very right wing evangelical vibe from the name. I love Jer as a nickname.

My teddy bear's called Jeremiah. I bought him when I was 15 on a school trip to Switzerland, he didn't have a name until I came back home. It was at that time in my life I was becoming more confident about talking to my mum about names (and my obsession with them) and I was loving Jeremiah - but when she called it ridiculous for a future child of mine I bestowed it upon my new teddy. I call him Jem quite often.

I love Jeremiah. I love how old timey Biblical it is. But I'm stuck for any nickname I'd like, which is why I'd never use it.

I like it pretty well, but prefer Jeremy. There is, however, the bullfrog connection, which most kids probably wouldn't get but even adults my age know.
My stepfather and I had a conversation about this name recently. He drives a schoolbus and was saying that out of a rather small list of students for one run, (I forget the number) he had three Jordans and two Jeremiahs, and how those names seemed to be very popular on black children now.

Bullfrog!
Once we lived opposite a home with a small garden pond with a large frog in residence. I called him Jeremiah and loved him; DH once in desperation got up in the middle of the night, raided the kitchen for a sieve and the garden for a half brick, and went on a frog hunt while I slept peacefully. Of course, as soon as he got too close, Jeremiah shut up so he finally went back to bed. Next morning I went into the kitchen and slid dramatically from one end of it to the other: in the dark, DH hadn't noticed that the sieve contained mung beans that I was sprouting, and they were all over the floor, which was patterned in green and yellow so they were invisible. All Jeremiah's fault!

My sympathies are with you for nearly falling on your face, and with Jeremiah for nearly getting mashed.
I mean, I'd way rather have a bullfrog's sound than say, a barking dog or a bunch of cicadas keep me awake at night.

Was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine... is what I think of first. the song. I don't hate Jeremiah at least. I'd call him Miah for short.

My overall reaction is to associate it with the word jeremiad. A prolonged complaint. Jeremiah would be one who issues jeremiads... besides that it just seems self-consciously Old Testamenty. I don't like the style.

I used to really like it, but someone I met not too long ago ruined it for me. )-: I like it on its own, no nn.

Its okay, andJeremy I guess. Jeremiah has always had a n in it the way I here it, like Jerenmiah. Its just the way people pronounce it I guess.
