[Opinions] celebrity BA
I am never first with these. Never. Till today.Cardi B and Offset have a daughter.
her name is Kulture Kiari Cephus.Kiari is Offset's real name.
Kulture.
How dumb. How dumb-sounding to be calling out "Kulture! Where are you?" or asking "Are you going to pick Kulture up from Grandma's or shall I?"We don't need to set the sky on fire. A little glow will do just fine.

How very cultured. *snort*
Sometimes celebrities do use interesting, meaningful names that are not in common use but too often they just seem random and somewhat boring. Once you get over the first shock, it just seems sort of blah.

Culture
the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.

...so she's the manifestation of her parents' collective achievements, I guess...which seems self-congratulatory.(I just looked it up, and they say she was named after her father's band's albums Culture I and Culture II. I might actually prefer Yung Rich Nation.)At least it's not Humanities or Cult.

oh for crying out loud ...That is such a lazy way to name a child. Like they care so little about her as a person that it's just by chance she ended up with the name she did; if Daddy's albums had been called other things, she'd have gotten a different name.
It's like naming your baby specifically for the day or month it was born on. don't hurt your damn head trying to actually think.

To me it's more like a chef naming his kid Rosemary, because he's spent a lot of time thinking about herbs...except it's more eccentric, because the parents are entertainers.

I may be severely in the minority hereBut I don't hate it.. I dislike it's been spelled with a K, but i think that in the current trends of weird virtue/occupation names Culture beats Dodgeball and Hospitality etc.
vote up1
Yeah, I just don't think it's as bad as people are saying. Maybe I should be appalled? IDK. :P

that's a little like ...Saying having your fingernails pulled out without anesthetic is better than having both your toe and fingernails pulled out without anesthetic. lol

Good point..

Who the hell named their kid Hospitality???

This is so ridiculous imho. Culture is a word, not a name, and adding a K doesn’t change it.

About her first name, I have just one question: Is the irony deliberate and subversive, or is it unconscious? On purpose I'm choosing to assume the best of people, and going with the former. That makes it quite interesting.Kiari is neat. I'm betting she'll go by it, and may be meant to go by it. Because Kiari Kulture wouldn't work the way Kulture Kiari does.I'm curious what they say about Cephus.

Cephus is the last name .. (edited to add another thought).Sorry, I should have been a bit more clear about that. Her father's real name, first and last, is Kiari Cephus.
Cephus is not an uncommon last name around here (don't know where poor Kulture's father is from) and is very much a black surname, like Washington or Jenkins. (At least around here Jenkins never seems to show up on white people.)
Kulture Cephus actually sounds horrible, like a lab test for some nasty drug-resistant infection.

Oh. Hmm. I guess she won't go by Kiari then ... interesting.eta after reading noel's message - I don't understand whatever thinking/feeling is behind someone naming a baby after a title of their own work.

Kiari ...I can't remember what exactly they were, but I remember when I studied medical terminology something about Chiari Malformations. Were they in the brain? I guess I could look it up but I'm too lazy just right now. Anyway, Kiari reminds me of those. Kiara or Kiera or Kiana would have been so much nicer. As for naming after the album, well, yeah, it would be like Michael Jackson naming one of his kids Thriller. (Not that I'd put that past him.)

Wow, what a terrible name. Bakteria Kulture would have been more appropriate since babies are germ magnets.I just find it sad that Kulture was the best name they could come up with. There are names that aren't my style, names that bore me, names that are a little bizarre, but then there are names that are just flat out terrible. Kulture belongs to the latter group. The poor child. Can you imagine the nickname possibilities? Kulty? I guess she could go by her initials, KC. That's tolerable. Or just K. I have a friend who goes by K because he hates his first name.I really wish I could offer naming services to celebrities and other folks who seem to confuse dictionaries with name books. Yeah, I could name my kid Sandwych Toylette-Brush, but something tells me there are better names out there.

At least Kiari is quite nice.

"Pick a word, any word"...Many nouns make great names. I'm not sure Kulture is one of them. I can't get over how unpleasant and guttural the sound is.Would be fun if they chose another pronunciation. "Actually, it's kool-too-ree, Ree-Ree for short".

Pretty dumb name. Culture would have been very marginally better.

It's about what I'd expect at this point from celebrity baby names. I don't have too strong of an opinion on it other than I just don't like the sound of the first syllable - kult. As far as word names go, it's whatever, but the sound is what bothers me most.
vote up1
eugh, and you can't even get a decent sounding nickname out of it. Kul? Kully? Churrie? All worse than the name itself,And it's a very, very unfeminine name.
vote up1
1. Not all names need nicknames.
2. Not all nicknames have to come directly from sounds existing in the name.
If she must have a nickname... Kay, K.K., Kiki, Koko, Kasey (from K.C.), Katie (Kulture), Tura? Kulti C? Or she may end up with a familiar nicknames that becomes what she goes by. My boss's wife (this is a 70+ year old woman) goes by Peedee, because her father called her 'Peaches' as a small child and she couldn't say 'Peaches', she said 'Peedee'. Her real name is Beth, but she uses Peedee professionally.

No, not all names need nicknames. But if the name's awful, a nickname's gonna be pretty desirable.
vote up1
Fun Fact: Her parents don't think her name is awful and will enjoy calling her by it.
vote up1
That's weird...I worked with an older woman named Petie, years ago. Her full name was Patricia.

Eh...it's not as bad as some other celebrity baby names, TBH. I'm not saying I like it, but the sound of "culture" isn't completely UN-namey, if that makes any sense. I don't think anyone will pick on her for the name, since she's a celebrity's kid, and will probably socialize with a lot of other rich and famous kids who have equally out-there names. IDK, I just can't get annoyed by this sort of thing, anymore. :P

It sounds like you are becoming name jaded. Names have lost their power to shock, annoy and/or amuse. If Kulture becomes a kid with a strong personality and lots of talent, she will probably play up her album sounding name and run with it, but quite a few celebrity kids have not inherited their parents abilities and a lot seem kind of vulnerable and bullied. I guess she can always write a tell all book about her experiences and trauma in a few decades...

Yes. Yes, I am name jaded. I should be outraged that a celebrity gave their kid a weird name. Flames, on the side of my face.

Yeah, I think Kulture is pretty impractical and also just doesn’t have the greatest sounds. I like Kiari though!
vote up1
Yeah, Kulture is pretty bad...
I like Kiari though. Nothing I would use, but I can appreciate it on someone else's child.

That's just horrible.

I see lots of kulture-related jokes in her future, such as about kultural appropriation. Poor girl, but at least she has a half-decent middle name that she can use when all the jokes and flak inevitably get too much for her someday.
vote up1
Kultural Appropriation = first album title.
vote up1
I thought the same thing. I can think of many album titles that play on the word "culture". I guess that was their inspiration behind the name.

Kulture Shock is the second album.

Kulture? (facepalm)

I hate it. I hate it so much. That poor child. What is with celebrities and their inability to name their kids something nice?
vote up1
I think it's usually either that they feel they have to prove they're interesting, or they just have weird name taste anyway and don't worry about it making their kid stand out, because their kid's going to stand out no matter what. I mean, we all have our GPs. But for the truly awful names, I think it's usually reason #1.
vote up1
Personally I think they do it for attention.
vote up1
Yes, they do it for the media coverage.

My theory as well. I applaud any celebrities who give their children "sane" names. It's unfortunate that we don't hear more of those. Every time a celebrity pregnancy is announced, I'm like, "yup, no doubt it's going to be a laughably bad name" And pleasantly surprised when it isn't.
vote up1
I'm the opposite. I'm slightly disappointed when a celebrity gives their kid a "normal" name.
vote up1
I kind of agree. Most celebrity kids are immune to any bad effects a weird name might have, and I'd probably just go straight for the guilty pleasure names if I knew my kid would be set no matter what.
vote up1
AgreeThey have more leeway than other people when it comes to name weirdness and it’s slightly disappointing when they don’t take advantage of that.
vote up1
SameI expect celebrities to do weird things and I'm disappointed when they don't.Plus it's neat to see how celebrity baby names affect trends.
