It seems kinda vapid to me, but it's not a terrible name. I would just assume they're into fashion and thought it was pretty.

It makes me think someone is a bit obsessed with fashion and designer brands. I guess Chanel would have siblings Dior, Versace and Polo. And maybe a dog named Coach.

I'd probably be surprised, as I'd expect someone born in the 80s or 90s. And I'd wonder if she was named after a relative, and not the designer at all.

Wouldn’t think any less of them, but I don’t like the name at all. This is despite having a childhood friend named Chanel. It’s a product name and so it seems really tacky. Would assume the parents were materialistic.

1. I'd think '#5' and snigger in my head, but not in a derogatory way: more in an 'oh, that's funny, but I know I'm weird' kind of way.

I think it's very pretty sounding and it's the name of one of my closest friends so I have a good association with it. My friend hates her name though- she goes by Nell or Nelly mostly these days.

It's too 'shallow' and tied to Coco Chanel and 'fashion' and showiness for me to ever consider myself but I don't think its a bad name at all and I would genuinely be able to smile and say how pretty I think the name is if someone told me it was the name of their kid.

I'd expect a son named either Dior or Versace. And I'd feel sorry for them. Don't have much respect for the fashion industry, and find it puzzling when people take it that seriously.

I'd think, how retro. It's a nice sounding name, even though I personally wouldn't want to have a name derived as Chanel is, from fashion. I prefer Janel. I'd be willing to praise the name if it were announced to me as the name of a friend's baby.

I would think they were a fan of Coco Chanel.

I would try not to assume, but I have to admit that part of me would wonder how self-obsessed, shallow and consumer-driven they were.

What would I think?

I would quiet my curiosities and assert - that none of these questions are ultimately my concern (unless the information is voluntarily offered) and that still, it is a cool name.

I think it's actually a rather nice-sounding name; much more attractive than Armani but not as cute as Tiffany.
If I was asked to guess, I'd guess the family was black, and as a bonus I might guess little Chanel was actually not all that little now but was born maybe twenty-something years ago. Seems to have been popular back then, more than it is now.
