[Facts] Edit submiited names?
Hi,
I am a bit new here. How do you edit submitted names? I am unable to find an option to do that. I wanted to add/fix some submissions where I noticed a few errors.
Thanks

Hello Jiop,Welcome to Behind the Name! It's lovely that you're interested in editing submitted names. :)The ability to edit names (other than one's own submissions) is not a default feature of user accounts on Behind the Name (BtN), especially brand new ones. I imagine that this is for security reasons, so that no one can abuse the feature and wreak havoc on the Submitted Names database. It's a very real concern, because the current team of editors regularly have to deal with troll submissions (such as expletives, names of body parts and racist terms), so one can only imagine what would happen if trolls (with their newly registered accounts) were able to also edit the names that were submitted by others. As a result, people that are interested in editing submitted names have to contact the webmaster of BtN (his name is Mike C.) and ask him if he is willing to grant them editor privileges. This can be done via private message, but you can also wait for him to reply to this thread (which he is sure to see eventually). In the meantime, you can let us know in this thread which names contain which errors and how you would like to see them fixed. An editor will eventually see that and implement your suggested solutions if they are verifiably correct (i.e. make sure to mention sources if you can!). Alternatively, you can also just submit a new entry for those names with the correct information, and one of the editors will eventually merge your entry with the existing one (during which the information provided by you will be preserved, as long as it's correct). All right, that's all - I hope that this was of help to you! :)

Oh, I see why new accounts are not allowed to edit already submitted names. I, for example, wanted to edit the entry for Ishika (https://www.behindthename.com/name/ishika/submitted) to add meaning and gender, scripts etc. Here, the names means "desirable" and is both a masculine and feminine name. Source: "M. V. Kamath; Kalindi Randeri (2002). Indian Names: From Classical to Contemporary, for People, Places & Products. Arkansh. p. 260." (https://books.google.com/books?id=3WJmAAAAMAAJ)I did not want to create a new entry for the same name as that would have been cumbersome for all editors involved.
I've seen other such entries as well which are missing information or have incorrect details and would like to fix them. Hopefully I will be allowed edit the entries here. Thanks

There is also the possibility to correct a name: https://www.behindthename.com/submit/submit
The correction will appear in a discussion tab attached to the submitted name (I'm not sure, but I suspect this tab is only visible to editors). Sooner or later, an editor will see your comment and take it into consideration if the information is appropriate / relevant or dismiss it if it's not.
Let me emphasize, though, that you (general you) should add reliable sources, both to corrections and to new submissions; I wish more submitters did that. We, the editors, constantly review old and new submissions alike to make the submitted names database as reliable as it can possibly be. It really is helpful when submitters add their sources.
