Liz and Ted are considering retirement, and Walt has put his artistic talents to good use and illustrates comic books now. Van and May are still going strong, and a few years ago they decided to expand their family. They were assured that they were having another son, so imagine their surprise when they had a daughter instead! They had to scramble to adjust their name list, and settled on an uncommon unisex first and middle name. Following the theme of Dune's name, they also alliterate with each other. Nell and Kit decided that one daughter is enough for them, but their family has expanded anyway. They recently rescued a German Shepherd from a shelter. He is named after the hero from Nell's favorite 80's action movie.

Joaquim and Zoya's children have left the nest. Roman is focusing on his music career, like his father and grandfather, and is emerging on the local music scene as a jazz guitarist. Aurora loves poetry and is going to college for a creative writing degree. Lucy is taking advantage of her multilingual background and teaching ESL at a local community center, and is also in a steady relationship with her high school boyfriend. His first name is Arabic, but he goes by an English nickname. His middle and last name are also Arabic.

The Robles family continues to grow. Rafael has flatly refused to retire, and is still teaching classical history. Sylvia and Alicia have moved back to Concord and are helping Valerie run the bookstore, which has become a popular hipster hangout spot after Valerie finally relented and started selling coffee. They also adopted a son together from El Salvador. His first name is Spanish to honor both Sylvia and Alicia's part-Hispanic heritage as well as his own, and his middle name is after Sylvia's hero, a famous figure in journalism. John and Alma have both found significant others. John married a woman who he met at his job at a publishing company. Her first and middle name are in the top 100 in 1980, and her maiden name is Chinese. Alma is engaged to her former TA from her Russian literature class. His full name is Russian, and he has a short English nickname.

Sebastian and Helene are both retired and have moved out of Copenhagen to a more relaxing rural area. They love having large gardens for their granddaughter to play in. Maja and Silvester still enjoy the city life, but visit Sebastian and Helene every weekend. During the week, their daughter is spoiled by her uncles Tarben and Anders. Her first name is a Danish version of a biblical name, and her middle name pays tribute to one of her grandparents.
