Help[Opinions] Benjamin
In the past I've switched between disliking Benjamin and being neutral towards it. Now, I'm quite liking it. But there's a catch: I strongly, strongly, strongly dislike Ben. It's everything I don't like in a name: plain, comfy, overused ... If I did name my son Benjamin, I wouldn't be calling him Ben under any circumstances. But his friends probably would - it's a very obvious nickname. Funnily enough, Benjamin isn't actually that popular in Scotland, compared with in other English-speaking places:

Ben as a full name here, however, is chronically common (ranked at #7), which makes me dislike it all the more:

Basically what I'm asking is this: If I were to name a son Benjamin sometime, what would be the chances that I could get away with calling him Benjie, not Ben? Would people automatically use Ben, or not, if introduced to him as Benjie? *Sigh*
PS ... Of course if he did want to go by Ben when he grew old enough to have an opinion, I wouldn't stop him. I'm thinking more of when he was younger, and what *other people* would do with the name.

I think if you were to introduce him as Benjie then it shouldn't be a problem. People will more easily trade one nickname for another rather than stick to the full form. But still you have to take into account that one day he might want to be called Ben and nothing you will be able to do about it by then.

I know a kid called Benjamin and nothing else.
If you called him Benjie, people woud catch on to that. My friend Ben is called Benjie by a lot of people.

I LOVE Benjamin with the nn Benji. If only we didn't already have a nephew named Benjamin. I think you could definitely get people to call him Benji - you just have to introduce him as such. Some folks may still shorten it to Ben occasionally, but most people are considerate about using the nn the parents prefer, I think.

If it's so complicated with nn and stuff, just give him another name. But if you introduce him as Benjie, I think most of the people will use that name. That shouldn't be a problem.

If you call him Benjie and introduce him as Benjie and teach him to write his name as Benjie...then people will call him Benjie.
