[Opinions] Marley
WDYT of Marley for a girl?
Replies
It's very nickname-y to me, though I don't really love Marlena or Marlene. Oddly enough, I think it could work as a nn for Margaret. Marlee is slightly more appealing to me, maybe because of Marlee Matlin. But also because Marley is such a surname to me, and makes me think of Bob Marley (not bad, but only if you're a BIG fan of his or something).

Prefer it for a boy.

nmsaa and I definitely don't like it for a girl. It's just a masculine sounding name and I'd expect the parents to be Bob Marley fans.

I know a girl named Marley and she is totally stuck up. It's a nice name for a girl imo, but I wouldn't use it.
Marley is a boy's name to me

I think I just don't like the sound of it. "arl" I'm weird about particular sounds like that.
It also makes me think of Bob Marley and reggae and heavy pot-smoking. And that's kind of a weird association for a little girl's name.

It is pretty awful for a girl.
Marlena - now there is a good name.

Mahala is really pretty but I don't like the meaning of 'sick' and 'weak'...do you think Marley sounds too feminine for a boy though? or is it too strong for a girl? or do you just not like it in general? (sorry for all the questions...I have never really thought about this name before and it kind of fascinates me for no real reason)
I know - I was traumatised when I discovered what Mahala means! My old Baybee Nayms book had said that it meant "tenderness", which was totally incorrect. I think I cried! Lol.
I don't think Marley sounds particularly feminine - there's lots of boys' names ending in 'ee' sounds (Stanley, Rodney etc).
I don't hold to the idea that boys' names sound 'strong' and girls' names sound 'weak', so of course I don't think it's too 'strong' for a girl. I just don't think it sounds like a girl's name - if anything it sounds like a place or a surname rather than a first name at all lol. If it has to be a first name, I'd put it on a boy.
I generally don't like many surnamey names so it's not really surprising that this one doesn't appeal to me.
