[Opinions] Vladimir, Valdemar and Volmar
Which, if any, of these names do you like? (Recently nameday for these names in Sweden.)Vladimir is a classic Russian name. Valdemar is the Scandinavian form (a royal Danish name). And Volmar is the short form of Valdemar. The nn for Valdmar is Valle (VAHL-eh).

Strangely enough, I'm a Harry Potter fan, and these names didn't remind me of Voldemort at all, until I saw what other people said.Vladimir made me think of the name Vlad, which I associate with the inspiration for Dracula (not a very good association for a name). I like the name itself, but that association sort of spoils it for me.Valdemar is the name of a country in one of Mercedes Lackey's fantasy series. It is the main country the series is set in, and, though it has a nice sound, the association is too strong for me to think of it as a person's name.Volmar is not my style, but I don't have strong feelings about it one way or another.

I like Vladimir (and love Vladislav even more), but I admit that I immediately misread Valdemar as "Voldemort".

Funny about VoldemortThe Harry Potter books are very popular in Sweden too.But nobody mentions Voldemort when somebody considers Valdemar.I suppose b/c Valdemar is a well known old name here. Obviously it would be otherwise in USA and other countries where people are unfamiliar with the name Valdemar."But it’s all right now.

I love all of them 100%!At first, I thought Vladimir was a bit gothic sounding, but that didn't stop me from loving it. Valdemar is gorgeous and I would definitely consider using it, as is Volmar. Try to be the best you can be, and if you can't then you can just pretend! :D

I like Vladimir, especially with nn Vlad
Valdemar is nice too (although too close to Voldemort to use for the next decenium), I don't like Volmar.
Valle is sweet, but overhere it would be unusable, because it means "to fall" :P

I'm afraid that Valdemar might sound too close to Voldemort in English-speaking countries for it to be a good name for a British or American child. Obviously Voldemort is one name from Harry Potter that you'd want to stay away from! :)I think Volmar would work OK in the USA. Vladimir is actually used somewhat in the Hispanic-American community.

Vladimir would be attractive on the right guy. Valdemar looks a bit too similar to Voldemort for me. And Volmar sounds like a sci-fi supervillain.Valle is a neat nickname.Array
