I'd think this was an attempt to use a surnamey-type name as a girls' name that didn't quite work out.
Or else she had a grandfather named Earl.Or that she ought to have a brother named Late.Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!

I could see that happening... Layton "Late"...or a sister, Leighton. And now I'm imagining Brighton and Early.
