Josh and Rachel have been married for two months now. They just moved to Chile, where Rachel has a position as a science teacher at a local high school. Josh has experience in construction, and found a job as a day laborer, but is trying to get a job as an electrician, something he has experience in. Rachel speaks Spanish fluently, and has been to Chile several times, even taking some college courses there. Josh, on the other hand, does not speak any Spanish--though Rachel is teaching him (and he's picking up some rudimentary skills on the job).

Six weeks after their arrival in Chile, Rachel found out she was pregnant. Though Josh wanted to return to the US so Rachel could have the baby; however, Rachel was confident that the local Chilean system would be sufficient. Against Josh's objections, they stayed in Chile, and eight months later, Josh and Rachel welcomed baby Emily into their family! Everything went smoothly, much to Josh's relief.

Josh and Rachel had a bit of a scare this year when Rachel was accosted in the market while Emily was with her. She filed a police report, but nothing came of it. Josh is pushing for a return to the US, but Rachel, though shaken, isn't quite ready to throw in the towel yet. Neither one was hurt, but Rachel always takes Josh with her to the market now.

This year, Lucas got pneumonia and had to be hospitalized for two months. Josh and Rachel were worried sick about him and spent all their free moments at his bedside. He is now finally recovered, but his parents are keeping an extra close eye on him. Josh and Rachel spent a lot of their savings to get medical care for Lucas, so their plans to return to the US are on hold for another year, until they save a little more money.

This year, the entire family got hit by the flu when it swept through the Chilean school system. Rachel had it first, followed by Lucas and Emily. Josh held it off for a week before coming down with the same thing. After a few weeks, everyone was feeling better and able to return to their usual activities. Josh and Rachel have finally made plans to move back to the US--Josh has already found a position as a construction foreman and, though Rachel is looking for a permanent position, is planning on substitute teaching for awhile first and making sure Emily adjusts to school. Emily will be six by the time they move, but Josh and Rachel are planning to enroll her in Kindergarten. Emily is so excited to see her grandparents and cousins and to introduce Lucas to everyone! Lucas doesn't really understand, but is excited because his big sister is excited.

About a month after moving to the US, Emily started Kindergarten. Her class had a pet hamster, and after much begging, Josh and Rachel gave in and got the kids their first pets--four goldfish named Rosa, Azul, Lulu, and Jojo. Lucas spends hours watching them, and Emily is so excited that her chore is to feed the fish each morning and evening. In contrast to living in Chile, Rachel and the kids now speak English in public and Spanish at home. Rachel is substitute teaching, and actually has an option to move to a full time position next school year. Her bilingual abilities make her a desireable person to fill the position. Emily has made a lot of friends at school amongst both the native English speakers and the native Spanish speakers. It also helps that she is older than a lot of the kids, since she was six when Kindergarten started. Lucas has been asking to go to school as well, and Rachel and Josh are working on getting him into a local bilingual preschool.

Josh also lost his job this year as a part of county budget cuts. He is still looking for another position, and has been able to take on some odd jobs to supplement their income. Rachel has been doing more substituting in several districts. Emily, now in second grade, is still loving school. She especially loves language class--they are learning Spanish right now, and Emily is practically teaching that part of class and knows more Spanish than her teacher. Lucas started kindergarten this year and was so excited when his teacher greeted the class in both English and Spanish. He loves practicing his vocabulary and is actually speaking more Spanish than English at home now. Baby Aaron is Lucas' little shadow, and the two of them are never found far from each other.
