[Opinions] Chauncey
DH has an infatuation with this name and has been half-seriously saying this is what he wants to name his firstborn son. WDYT? It's nmsaa and I highly doubt that DH would like it if it wasn't the name of a professional athlete.

When my mum was pregnant with my brother Anthony my dad joked around that his name would be Chauncey Godfrey Pembroke and everyone believed him. So we kept up this charade the whole pregnancy that that would be the baby's name. People's faces said it all *grimace....fake half smile* 'thats...different'
When he was born he wasn't called Chauncey, but Chauncey remains his middle name 6 years on! I think it is a ghastly name... but it does kind of suit a little boy. But it really sounds terrible. If you do not like it at all, then it shouldn't be your child's name.

Chauncy is on the top of my sister's list of future horse names. It is right up there with Marchie, the Horse Who Marches Around (which is what my friend calls the horse she shareboards now as a joke). For a while, Connie was trying to convince my mom to buy her a hot pink sattle-pad with the name Chauncy written in black letters... So, yeah, it is a horse name to me.

I'm with you. I'd hate to be called Chauncey - it sounds very stuffy and pretentious.
Being There (edited w/ apology to Sadie)
was a movie starring Peter Sellers in 1979, about a learning disabled man named Chance, a gardener, who gets mistaken for being some brilliant guy named Chauncey Gardiner. That's all I can think of whenever I see Chauncey.
But it was a great, funny movie! Go rent it!
ETA Sadie you beat me to it!

Lillian, you have good taste in movies :-)
I second your point about renting the movie, especially for someone who is considering this name. I think alot of people may associate the name with Chauncey Gardiner, because the movie is well known and the name so rare.

I think I will
Of course, I'll neglect to mention the name coincidence and let DH draw his own conclusions ;)

It's very... fancy sounding. It sounds like the kind of name a woman would like for her son, but that a man would veto immediately with images of him getting beat up on the playground.
Lol, I can't count the number of times he's had this conversation with one of our male friends.
Friend: Chauncey? Do you want all the other kids to beat him up?
DH: I bet Chauncey Billups didn't get beat up as a kid.
Friend: Yeah, well, your kid won't be Chauncey Billups. He'll be Chauncey [Surname].

Chauncey (or a similar spelling) is the name of a character from the Pokemon card game.
LoL, it's bad that that was actually my first thought when I saw this board.
I didn't even know it was the name of a pro athlete, but I see it as very British. :b It could suit a cute little boy or a stuffy old man. It also suits a cat well. LOL. If you don't like it, though, it's definitely a no-go for your future child. :b

I can understand how a young American today might think Chauncey sounded "British", but as a given name it's actually very American. This surname became a given name originally because of prominent members of the Chauncey family of Massachusetts, mostly importantly Charles Chauncey, the second president of Harvard University.
It also suits a cat well.
ROFL! Last night he mentioned it to some of our friends and one responded, "Save it for your dog."

Wow, I did a big thing on these boards back in Feb/March about Chauncey... I'm using it for a character in one of my stories - an arrogant, know-it-all, wannabe-ladies-man, asshole basically.
I've only known a few Chauncey's ever and they've all been like that. I actually did a poll with a list of names, asking which one would belong to someone you hate and Chauncey won.
But, then again, it IS fun to say!

I know how that goes! Mikey would name his firstborn Carl Yastrzemski Lastname if he could. But anyway, I don't care for Chauncey. It seems sort of pretentious, and there was a girl in one of my classes named this who kept getting called Chance. I hope you can sway your DH against it! :)
What are the convulsions of a city in comparison with the insurrections of the soul?
Man is a depth still greater than the people.

Luckily I have a lot of people on my side. His Chauncey Declaration is never met with approvals.
