Jack is quite dated, and was ubiquitous in past generations (about as common as just going by John, or Johnny), but it isn't inherently bad. On anyone under 30 I'd expect Jack to be a nickname for Jackson.
Like I said, it isn't inherently bad, but it does give me strong film noir / 1920s detective vibes.
