[Opinions] Alphonse
What do you think? Does it strike you as too "old" or "beardy" (yes, a description I got!) sounding, or do you think it could be ready for a comeback? (Calling it old will neither hurt my feelings nor deter me--don't worry. ;)Would you want to call an Alphonse by a nickname? The ones I've thought of are Alphie/Alfie (dislike this, myself), Al, Ali, and Fonzi! ;) My favourite is Ali, and I have to admit it's influenced by the fact that Alan Alda was born Alphonse and called Ali as a child. And middle names--oh, the question of middle names. I've thought of Alphonse Christian, Alphonse Riley, and Alphonse Lemuel. Opinions-comments-suggestions-insults? ;DThanks.Array (half in love with Hawkeye Pierce)

"beardy" is a good description, it seems very old to me.

Alphonse and AlfonsIn Sweden, we have totally different associations with Alphonse or Alfons.Alfons Åberg is a very popular children's book character, so we tend to think of a cute little boy. Alfons was extremely uncommon before these books by Gunilla Bergström. Some are translated into English and there he is called Alfie Atkins.I have heard that a slang word for pimp in Denmark is "alfons". This may deter some Swedish parents but would not be an issue for American parents."But it’s all right now.

I love it, but then again, I do have a thing for old names. It makes me think of the Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. I think I would prefer the nn Ali. Out of your combos, I like Alphonse Christian the best.

I like Alphonse, its so old but sweet, i would use either Alfie or Ali. Alphonse Christian is sweet, i wouldnt use Lemuel, thats definately old, and Riley doesnt seem quite right.I prefer Algernon or Ambrose to Alphonse.~~* BEX *~~Surfing is my religion!Image hosting by Photobucket

My favorite nickname for that is Fonzi. Where's the Kaboom? There's suppose to be an Earth shattering kaboom!" -Marvin the Martian.

Alphonse strikes me as geeky (no offense to any Alphonses out there:).I like Ali. Simple and understated.

As a little girl my sister Lauren had a stuffed owl she named Alphonse. So I am predisposed to think it's a sweet, cuddly name *LOL*. And love Fonzi as the nn! That one's great. My suggestions for mn's, from your own favorites list:
Alphonse Auberon
Alphonse Ezra
Alphonse Jerome
Alphonse Lazarus
Alphonse WalterAnd from my favorites list:
Alphonse Benedict
Alphonse Elias
Alphonse James
Alphonse Malcolm
Alphonse Matthias
Alphonse Redmond
Alphonse Thaddeus
Alphonse TiberiusAnd I totally get the "half in love with Hawkeye Pierce" thing. I was too for a long time.~Lillian~

Hawkeye Pierce, aside from the womanizing, is the sort of man I'd love, lol. He's intelligent, witty as sin, and passionate about everything--and Alan Alda was (is still, IMO) a sexy beast.Alphonse Auberon~ I've been hot-and-cold about Auberon lately.
Alphonse Ezra~ It might take me a bit to warm up to it; the rhythm is a tidge samey.
Alphonse Jerome~ I really like this--St. Jerome is a favourite of mine. :)
Alphonse Lazarus~ I was thinking about Alphonse Laszlo, but Alphonse Lazarus is interesting, too! Do you think the double S endings might be too much?
Alphonse Walter~ So utterly M*A*S*H in my mind--it makes me smile. I like it.Alphonse Benedict~ I really like this, since not only is St. Benedict neat, Bendicht is an old family name that looks nicer as Benedict, lol.
Alphonse Elias~ Again with the S endings, but I really like Elias.
Alphonse James~ James is a family name, and so this appeals to me.
Alphonse Malcolm~ I'm not a huge fan of Malcolm, but I'm not sure why. I've warmed up to it thanks to the delectable (and gay, woe) Malcolm Gets, but I'm not quite at the point of considering it.

I pronounce Alphonse with almost a soft Z at the end, so the S endings on the mn's don't bother me. I think I like Alphonse Lazarus better than Alphonse Laszlo, though the latter has some potential. And I really like Alphonse with Elias, Matthias and Thaddeus as well as Lazarus.I thought you might like Alphonse Walter!I love assonance. That's where I get ideas like Alphonse Auberon, even though Auberon does not appeal to me. Jerome the same way. Alliteration is also good, which led me to Ezra and Lazarus because of the Zs.And I have to tell you how much it completely tickles me that in 2006 an 18yo girl loves Hawkeye Pierce and finds Alan Alda a sexy beast! You just kill me, Array, I wish we could meet. You're somethin else, darlin. BTW, did you happen to see that I responded to your response to Ellemenope's (however it's spelled!) "evolution of a name list?" It's about Liese. Go see.~Lillian~

What can I say? I find intelligent men hot! My mother gave me his autobiography for Christmas, and I just finally finished reading it yesterday--and damn, is it hilarious. You should've seen me when the 2005 Oscars rolled around. I was so ecstatic that he'd been nominated for an Academy Award--I spent most of my time up 'til the night giggling, ha.My uncle once told me that I have the tastes of a forty-year-old. So perhaps, I'm just a middle-aged woman trapped in the body of an eighteen year old (sort of like being trapped in the body of a white girl, as Julie Brown would say).On Liese; I didn't like Leighza at first, but I have to admit it's growing on me! I like the way it looks much more than Leeza, which was the best I'd come up with before Liese and Leighza. It's something I'm going to have to consider more thoroughly, clearly--and I'll probably end up doing so when I should be writing a ten-page paper!I love assonance and alliteration, too, particularly with certain sounds. My favourite is L, but Z sounds appeal to me, too. And now that I've slept on it, Alphonse Jerome and Alphonse Matthias are in the front running. Array (off crutches and off to breakfast--still wearing an air cast)

Stick with Hawkeye Pierce. So much better, imo. Alphonse brings to mind a gas station attendant with a -17 IQ. I have no idea where I got that, but there you have it. Hawkeye Pierce, on the other hand, is fabulous.
Alphonse to me seems more "middle namey" than "first namey".

I wouldn't *use* Hawkeye Pierce itself, lol...As that's a bit too much a tribute even for me! M*A*S*H is one of my all-time favourite TV shows, and Alan Alda is one of my favourite actors, though. :D I have to admit that my love of Alphonse is also related to Full Metal Alchemist, because the character Al is so damned cute.I can see what you mean about Alphonse sounding "middle namey." I'm going to have to think about it a bit, I think.Array (thoughtfully)
