A.D. Cloyd and others speculate that the Cloyd name comes from MacLeod. The earliest record of the Cloyd name comes from James Cloyd said to have been 9 years old in the Siege of Londonderry in 1689. I wish there was an earlier record found somewhere. I still have trouble believing 100% that it is MacLeod. The Welsh Clwyd seems like another option for a theory and until we find James Cloyds father. I have the line of my roots traced to James and this is the roadblock. Maybe someday someone can research records in derry and find more information. I would also be inspired by a Cloyd record prior to 1689.

It could be a corruption of the Welsh Clwyd, just as Lloyd is derived Llwyd.

I think that it might be Scottish, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure where it comes from, but I know some people with that name. Maybe someone else can help you out, though.
