[Opinions] Merope
What are your thoughts on Merope?
Pr. MEH-ro-pee? It kind of has a similar rhythm to Melanie or Emily and it's interesting.

It's caught my interest, it definitely wouldn't work on someone today and the sound is kinda odd, but I am intrigued by it.
It is interesting! I wonder what it means (the BtN entry gives an etymology, but doesn't really explain what the name would mean).
I'd pronounce it with a rhythm more like Cherokee, than like Melanie (still a dactyl, but last syllable is stronger/longer). Otherwise I kinda lose the P and it sounds blah.
I don't love the way it sounds. I want the P to be a different letter. Like if it were Merophe - I'd like it better.

I really like Merope, it's such an underrated name.
I think it's gorgeous. Merry would be a cute nickname.
I mainly associate with Voldemort’s mother in Harry Potter.
The 'rope' part trips me up a bit, visually. I'd probably get over that if it were used for a person.
The sound reminds me of Opie (from The Andy Griffith Show)...which makes it seem either goofy/dopey/misunderstood or similar to Opal.
It does also sound like morose, mopey...which gives it a vibe similar to Dolores, to my ear.
I think it's interesting, though, and not undignified. I like Mer as a NN.

Merope is caught somewhere between morose and mopey in my mind. The only character association I have with it is Merope Gaunt, who was depressing and Voldemort's mother. I know that there was a Greek nymph along with some other characters with the name and Voltaire had a play titled "Merope," but I don't know anything about the play other than that it was a tragedy.
