Wow, I don't hear it as implying terrible circumstances. Patience is a daily, mundane thing, like just the act of listening is usually showing patience.

I don't think it is universal to instantly think of Patience as someone calmly enduring hardship. As you say, someone can be patient in all kinds of circumstances. A longsuffering woman (possibly living during the late 1600s) who had gone through hell and high water is just the mental image that I have.
There is some suggestion of bearing with something unpleasant in the word "patient," so I kind of know why I automatically think of hardship.
1: bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint
2: manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain
3: not hasty or impetuous
4: steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity
I would be happy to meet a young, cheerful Patience. That would probably alter my impression of the name.
