Just a thought -- there are so many boys named Alexander who go by Xander or Zander these days, why couldn't Xine or Zine (pronounced Zeen, rhyming with "seen") be a short form for Maxine?

They are both ugly ugly ugly, for different reasons. Maxine is harsh and sounds like a disinfectant spray that burns like fire when you put it on a scratch. Like Bactine but maxed. And little boy Maxes are a dime a dozen. (And dog and cat Maxes.)

Sloan(e) sounds both dead-weight heavy and slimy, and has such a faux-blueblood-pretentious air about it. The sl sound isn't attractive.

I like the flow of Maxine Sloane.

I have a wonderful colleague named Maxine and she never gets called Max. Another colleague named her daughter Maxie (just that)

I'm one of few here, I believe, that love the name Sloane. I can't remember the book, but I do remember loving the female character named Sloane. She was quite the spitfire, but with a big heart.

Sloane, regardless of spelling, seems harsh for a girl. I've never met anyone named that but I would think of it as a boy's name only. If you set your foot down, it should be ok about Maxine. That worked for my SIL with my nephew, Michael. It was much less of an issue than she expected. Sloane Maxine sounds choppy. Maxine Sloane has too much of a "hissing" sound.

I love Maxine. It's only 2 syllables, so a nickname isn't unavoidable. Sloane is really not my thing. Where Maxine is strong and feminine sounding, Sloane is strong but not feminine.

I used to not like Sloane, but I don't mind it now. I think it definitely has a take charge vibe plus there's a slippery quality about it that makes it a good villain name but also could make it seem pretty in a silky shimmery way.

Maxine and Sloane are nice names, but they do sound very tomboyish. Maxine Sloane Christensen...a bit lispy, but not bad. You could use both if you want. If I could only choose one, it would be Maxine. It sounds more feminine. There are a number of female Maxes nowadays...I am fond of it.

I don't have any middle name suggestions, as I think most names do not flow well with either of them. Maxine Ariadne sounds forced. Maxine Elizabeth is cliche. Sloane Avery sounds like a boy. Sloane Diana and Sloane Arianne don't feel right..

But I also think if you really, really hate a nickname, it's playing with fire to pick a name with that nickname. Even if you forestall it there's no knowing the kid won't one day decide for themselves they'd like to be called it. If you are ok with Max but just don't want to use it yourself Maxine may well be fine but if you truly just do not like it, maybe not.

What do you think of Simone? Seems like a similar vibe and a blending of the sounds in both names.

I can't say I'm a fan of either, but slow and slimy Sloane is really not encouraging, and then there are or were Sloane Rangers; if Maxine is what you like, then go for it. She could well become Maxie rather than Max if you think that would be better - I do. And it might be easier to go by Maxine as an adult if she started from Maxie and not Max. But, Max can be somewhat neutralised by a really feminine mn:

I knew two Christensen sisters at school: Christine and Celia, and their aunt (our neighbour) was Karen. I liked all of the names.

I don't like either. Sloane has a really sludgy sound to it that I just can't stand, it's very heavy and dull. I absolutely don't find it pretty.

Maxine is... every Maxine I've known has been quite unfeminine, either a tomboy or sort of frumpy. I do know a Maxine who doesn't go by Max, so it is possible... but Max is the only nn that really exists for it, so people are going to want to use it.
