Thanks a lot for your help. This answers my question to some degree, so I can at least say: the name CLARUS turns up in the list of Roman consuls in the first (or rather second?) cent. This is something.
Thanks also for the links! I had come across those consul lists before, but didn't think of them when I did my research (and finally got lost in google).
