HOUSE OF MERCIA
King Hugh III of Mercia (35)
Queen Adelaide of Mercia (nee Valois) (30)
Crown Prince Hugh of Mercia (13)
Princess Rohesia of Mercia (10)
Princess Amice of Mercia (8)
Princess Idony of Mercia (3)
Dowager Queen Cateline of Mercia (65)
20 years ago, King Hugh II of Mercia died young in a mysterious hunting accident, leaving power in the hands of his 15-year-old son, the present King Hugh III, with Queen Cateline ruling in her son's name. However, Baron Firmin of Wessex attempted to claim the regency, and rose up in rebellion against Cateline. Firmin had been on the hunting trip that caused Hugh's death, and said that with his dying breath the old king had named Firmin the regent. Cateline led her troops into battle, and captured Firmin, executing him for treason. Rumor has it that perhaps Hugh II's "accident" wasn't so accidental after all. However, Firmin's son, the new Baron Everard of Wessex, has remained a thorn in Mercia's side.
To help secure her son on the throne, Cateline arranged for him to marry the French princess Adelaide of Valois. When Adelaide was old enough, the couple married and Cateline handed full power over to Hugh III, though he frequently seeks her advice. Soon after Adelaide and Hugh married, their first son, Crown Prince Hugh, was born, pleasing Cateline, Hugh and Adelaide as there was now an heir. Afterwards, Adelaide gave birth to three daughters, Rohesia, Amice, and Idony.
Mercia has largely recovered from the devastation of Firmin's War, but Baron Everard still launches plots against them from abroad. Mercia has become a major trading power, thanks in part to their new links to Adelaide's family. King Hugh III's rule (and his mother's regency before him) has been popular, and Mercia and her royal family are prospering.
